A group of Wanderers fans braved soaring temperatures at the end of May to trek 18 miles from Preston to Bolton to raise money for the Nat Lofthouse Memorial Fund.

The group got a bus to Preston North End's Deepdale Stadium at 9am on Saturday, before setting off back along the A6 towards the Reebok Stadium.

Club Chaplain Phil Mason was joined by Cllr John Walsh, who organised the walk, and the Mayor of Bolton Cllr Guy Harkin.

Lofty the Lion was also in attendance on what was the 60th anniversary of the match in which Nat earned his famous Lion of Vienna nickname after scoring twice in a 3-2 victory for England in Austria.

Club chaplain Phil Mason added: "It was very hot and quite a challenge, but it was a really great day.

"Everyone was in good spirits and is enthusiastic about the statue."

Cllr Walsh said: "It went very well. Those who walked, all survived the heat. Thanks to all who took part and who sponsored the event."
