Wanderers U18s 2 Blackburn U18s 3

Posted on: Thu 21 Apr 2011

Wanderers scholars were narrowly edged out by their Blackburn counterparts on Thursday afternoon as Rovers nicked a pulsating clash 3-2 at the Eddie Davies Academy.

David Lee and Tony Kelly's side twice came from behind in the first half through goals from Andy Kellett and Oluwasanmi Odelusi, however the visitors claimed all three points with just over ten minutes remaining.

Offering his review of proceedings, Assistant Coach Kelly said: "It was a really entertaining first half. After Blackburn scored early on, Andy (Kellett) bagged a great goal just a few minutes later. He advanced from left-back, played a one-two with Sami (Odelusi) on the edge of the box and found the bottom corner of the goal.

"Blackburn's second came through a mistake, but we managed to get back level again quickly. After neat build-up play, Sami (Odelusi) found the back of the net with a curler from the edge of the box.

"Blackburn started second half brighter and fatigue started to set in with our players. We were down to our last 11 fit players because seven featured in the reserves on Tuesday night at West Ham.

"Blackburn got the winner ten minutes from time, but we are all pleased with how the lads applied themselves.

"They have done absolutely brilliant this season and I just hope we can finish on a high when we play Manchester City in our final game next Wednesday.

"The game is a 2pm kick-off if any fans want to come and see the lads in action for the final time this season because we are aiming to end with three points."

Head Coach Lee added: "I thought we shaded the game in the first half. After we got back to 2-2, Sami (Odelusi) had a good chance to make it 3-2 but he probably should have made a different decision when through on goal.

"It was very difficult in the second half and we had to do a lot of defending. We conceded late on but, if I'm being honest, 3-2 was a fair reflection of the game.

"Because of players being involved in the reserves, we had to name three Under-16s on the substitutes bench and I'm sure that would have been a great experience for them to take forward.

"Andy Kellett deserves a special mention because I thought he was our outstanding candidate for man of the match. Considering he had played 35 minutes in the reserves at West Ham just a couple of days earlier, he played very well and scored an excellent goal."
