Wanderers cruised into the fifth round of the FA Youth Cup with an impressive 4-0 victory over Hull City at the Reebok Stadium.

The U18s blew away the Tigers in a quick-fire five minute spell straight after half-time thanks to goals from Aaron Mooy and Maison McGeechan after Michael O'Halloran had netted the opener midway through the first period.

The victory was completed when Danny Ward lashed in a low, skidding free-kick three minutes from full-time.

It was a convincing display from start to finish by Peter Farrell's team, who made it two victories within the space of four days following on from the 2-0 success over Stoke City at the weekend.

Hull forward Darragh Satelle had the first opportunity of the match with only two minutes on the clock when he headed straight into the arms of Tom Brocklehurst after finding himself unmarked ten yards from goal.

And after a scrappy opening 15 minutes, the match began to open up and started looking like a cup tie.

The lightning quick Maison McGeechan embarked on a fine dribble down the right, crossed for Michael O'Halloran, but the tall winger's glancing header was well saved by Ben Hallam in the Tigers goal.

Hull's response was to carve out a free-flowing move of their own which resulted in Brocklehurst tipping Cavan Holohan's long-range drive over the crossbar.

With the match showing signs that it was coming to life, the first goal of the game followed shortly after when O'Halloran made his second opportunity of the evening count with a splendid first-time lob over Hallom on 22 minutes. Grant Spencer picked out the number 11's run superbly with a raking ball over the top, and with the keeper rushing out of his goal, O'Halloran showed composure to execute a fine lofted finish from just inside the penalty area.

The goal was undoubtedly the highlight of the first half as chances were few and far between from there on in. Yann Ekra forced Brocklehurst into another smart save from a tight angle and the young goalkeeper was once again alert when left winger Tom Cairney broke through the Bolton rearguard just minutes before the interval.

But despite Hull looking like they were going to get themselves back into the contest, their hopes took a blow within seconds of the restart when Aaron Mooy doubled Wanderers lead. The young Australian picked the ball up with his back to goal inside the penalty area, and in fortuitious style, his right footed shot looped up over Hallam and into the back of the net.

2-0 became 3-0 five minutes later when Maison McGeechan got in on the scoring act too. Michael O'Halloran timed a run to perfection to get in behind the Hull defence and when Hallam made a parried save, McGeechan was in the right place to convert the rebound with a powerful finish from 12 yards out.

With the tie more or less secure, Peter Farrell's men didn't relent. Aaron Mooy was within a few feet of grabbing his second of the evening with a long-range free-kick and McGeechan too came close to taking Bolton's tally to four.

Hull were obviously stunned with Wanderers' great start to the second half and it took them the best part of 20 minutes before they were able to register their first real attempt after the break. And indeed when they did, Brocklehurst was again more than equal to John Leonard's far post side-footed effort.

Ekra came close to reducing the deficit on 65 minutes when he acrobatically volleyed wide with a bicycle kick before Tom Crainey struck the upright from close range only moments later.

Peter Farrell's response to Hull's bright spell was to make a double change as he introduced George Pawley and Nathan Battersby for Joe Riley and the scorer of the third goal Maison McGeechan.

But with the damage already inflicted, Wanderers seemed content to play the remainder of the match at a sedate pace.

However, the icing on the cake came on 87 minutes when Danny Ward rounded off a fine Bolton performance with a splendid free-kick from 25 yards. His left-footed drive evaded the Hull City wall and Hallam was unable to prevent the ball from finding the net despite a full stretch dive to his right.

The U18s now face a tricky away tie at Nottingham Forest in the next round, but having beaten them 4-0 already this season then they will surely fancy their chances of progressing to the latter stages of the competition.
