Bolton Wanderers U18s are currently enjoying a fine run of form having embarked on a five-match unbeaten run in the Barclays Premier Academy League.

In the previous update it was reported how the early season form, which reaped a solitary victory over Sheffield United from the first four fixtures, had improved with successive wins against Sheffield Wednesday and Everton.

In the three weeks since, Peter Farrell's team have continued that momentum by chalking up further victories over Wolverhampton Wanderers and Liverpool and drawing at Stoke City.

Javlon Campbell struck the only goal of the game to secure the three points against Wolves, while Chris Stokes scored for the second campaign in succession against Liverpool, following on from his penalty at Anfield in FA Youth Cup last season.

Maison McGeechan notched against the Potters to earn Wanderers a point, a result which now leaves them placed second in the league table after nine rounds of fixtures.

The recent results have obviously pleased Assistant Academy Manager David Lee, who believes that the improved form is down to the fact the playing squad are acclimatised to the demands of academy football.

He said: "Discipline is a massive thing and sometimes it is a bit of a shock to come in from schoolboy football straight into a professional, scholarship environment. Once the players get over that initial transition, they get into a routine.

"Peter (Farrell) has got that continuity with the lads now and once you get one or two good results then the self belief grows. There is a confidence within the squad and I think that sometimes it takes time for the new scholars to settle in. But now they have done, plus having the blend of the second and third years within the U18s group, then there is a good balance.

"They are playing some technically good football and are learning quickly how to win games at this level. You set your benchmark against the likes of Manchester United and Liverpool because they have quality players that have been recruited from different countries. It's good to pit your wits against clubs like that and fortunately at the moment we seem to be coming out on top.

"I'd like to think that the players can continue this good run but football is full of ups and downs. Squads can change week in week because of call-ups to the reserve team, so you might have a young squad up against senior older players with the U18s. Until you come up against the opposition on a matchday then you never know what you are going to get.

"Technically, we can compete but physically it can sometimes be a little bit detrimental. But whilst we are on this run of form we have to keep working hard and enjoying it. If that happens and the performances continue to be good then the results should take care of themselves."
