Peter Farrell believes that his players can hold their heads high following the heartbreaking penalty shoot-out defeat to Fulham.

The U18s exited the FA Youth Cup at the fourth round stage after losing 5-3 on penalties to their opponents from West London.

Farrell explained that he was proud of his troops for their effort and application, but admitted that it was a cruel way to lose a game.

He said: "I thought the lads were fantastic. Their effort, commitment and attitude was first class. It was a shame that the game finished like it did because the lads are only young players and they were absolutely exhausted after 120 minutes.

"I thought that we were the better side, but I suppose the tie could have gone either way. Both teams had lots of chances and when we had possession of the ball we played very well.

"The lads are gutted at the moment and the pleasing thing is that the new manager came in after the game and he has told them to lift their heads and that they need to feel proud of themselves. From a coach's perspective I am very pleased because they gave 110 percent and I can't criticise them for anything.

"There will be moments like this again during their footballing career so they need to be mentally strong. Events like this will make them better footballers."
