Odelusi Fires Wanderers Into Milk Cup Final

Posted on: Fri 30 Jul 2010

Wanderers U18s are now only one game away from lifting the Milk Cup after they reached the final with a 1-0 win over Desportivo.

Oulwasanmi Odelusi was once again the deciding factor with a well-taken goal 14 minutes from time against the Brazilian club.

But the match wasn't without its fair share of drama as three minutes into stoppage time at the end of the second-half, Desportivo were awarded a penalty when goalkeeper Jay Lynch was harshly adjudged to have brought down the opposition striker.

However, Gustavo Scarpa wasted the opportunity from 12 yards when he hit his kick wide of the post.

Wanderers will now meet Etoile Lusitana in the final at Ballymena tonight (Friday). Kick-off is at 8.15pm.

David Lee

Speaking about his team's passage through to the final, proud coach David Lee said: "Again it was another tough encounter and we needed a strong mental approach to see it through.

"There was quite an intimidating atmosphere before the game because the Brazilians were singing and dancing in the tunnel, but we stepped up to the challenge and put in a real professional performance.

"Oulwasanmi took his goal fantastically well - a throw from the right was flicked on by Jack Sampson and he managed to spin and hit it low into the corner of the goal.

"We deserved our lead and then your heart sinks when they are awarded a penalty so late into the game. We've seen the incident again on the DVD and it was never a penalty because the goalkeeper got his hand to the ball, but justice was done when it was missed.

"We played Etoile Lusitana in the group stages so we know all about them. We don't fear them and we'll give it our best shot in the final.

"Obviously there will be a few nerves because the lads won't have played in front of such a big crowd before, but there is enough experience in the coaching team with myself, Tony Kelly and Neil Edwards to help settle everyone down.

"We are confident without being too over confident because I think our team is talented and professional enough to win the tournament, which would be an outstanding achievement."
