Wanderers U18s 5 Southampton U18s 2

Posted on: Tue 31 Aug 2010
Wanderers U18s continued their fine start to the season with an emphatic 5-2 victory against Southampton at the weekend.

Just days after the first-team saw off the threat of the South Coast club in the Carling Cup, David Lee and Tony Kelly's team produced a similar performance to make it two successive victories in the Academy Premier League.

Bolton fell behind on ten minutes when striker Tony Garrod put the visitors ahead before Graeme MacGregor grabbed an equaliser eight minutes later with a superb chipped finish.

The move of the match, involving James Caton and Ryan Stayte, resulted in Oulwasamni Odelusi heading Wanderers into a 2-1 lead at half-time.

Caton scored his side's third with a shot from the edge of the box just after the restart, but the deficit was reduced on 55 minutes when Joe Cutis struck back with a left footed effort.

Odelusi grabbed his second goal of the game on the hour mark and Liam Irwin completed the scoring late on for Wanderers with a fine individual strike.

Speaking about the result, Assistant U18s Coach Tony Kelly said: "We had a good start last week at MK Dons and so it was great to continue that momentum in our first home game on Saturday.

"We showed great character to score five goals after going behind early on and there is plenty for David and I to be pleased about.

"Credit to Southampton because they played some decent football, but our lads won their own individual battles and came out on top.

"We have told the lads that a winning habit is the best habit they can have and hopefully now they can keep this going.

"We play Leeds next week and I'm confident that we can put in another similar performance. We have a got a good week of training ahead of us and we'll prepare the players in the right manner as we always do."
