Leeds United U18s 0 Wanderers U18s 3

Posted on: Wed 17 Nov 2010
Wanderers U18s kept up their 100 percent start to the season with an emphatic 3-0 win against Leeds United on Saturday.

After disposing of MK Dons and Southampton in the first two weeks of the season, David Lee and Tony Kelly's side produced a rousing second-half performance against the Yorkshire club to take their points tally to a maximum of nine.

James Caton opened the scoring five minutes after the restart with a superb individual strike. After cutting in from the wing, he hit a precise finish from the edge of the box which beat the goalkeeper at his near post.

And then Liam Irwin popped up with a fine brace to seal the win for Wanderers.

Good work from Ryan Stayte on the right side resulted in the midfielder converting from close-range, before Irwin grabbed his second with a precise cross-shot following a cleverly taken short corner.

Speaking about the performance, Head Coach David Lee was delighted with the way his players applied themselves.

"It's been a great start," explained Lee.

"We have got that competitive edge with all the players wanting to be in the team, and the ones that are selected are doing exactly what we are asking from them.

"I look deeper than just the results, particularly at the individual performances and whether they are taking in all the aspects that we are working on in training and they seem to be doing that.

"There's a confidence within the team and when you go on a good run of results then there is a positive mentality with everyone wanting to do well.

"A few of the lads will be involved in the reserves over the next few days so there is progression as well. It is a squad game so other boys who have been waiting to get into the team now have an opportunity.

"We've got a stern test next week against Sunderland and every game throws up a different scenario, so it will be a real challenge and we will have to prepare in the right manner like we have done in every game we've played this season.

We've had a good start but it's important we remain focused and don't get carried away. I tell the lads to enjoy their weekend but come Monday morning we are back out there looking ahead to the next game."
