Steve Davis

Posted on: Wed 15 Sep 2010

Steve Davis is well known in North West football circles having spent the vast majority of his career in this part of the UK.

Davis was born in Hexham and spent the early part of his playing career at Southampton, making his debut for the Saints at the age of 21.

However, it was during three spells with Burnley that Davis cemented his reputation as a more than capable central defender.

During his second spell at Turf Moor, between 1991 and 1995, he helped the Clarets to two promotions before he was sold to Luton in a deal worth £750k.

Then after three years with the Hatters, he rejoined the Clarets in a shock £800k move and, as club captain, proudly led the club back into the First Division.

Davis also enjoyed spells with Blackpool (2003/4) and York City (2004-6) before returning to Burnley to take up the post of first team coach under Steve Cotterill. He was then promoted to assistant manager in 2007, but Cotterill got the sack shortly afterwards.

When Owen Coyle succeeded Cotterill in the Turf Moor hot seat, he appointed Davis as first team coach and the pair, along with the other members of the coaching staff, helped mastermind Burnley's promotion to the Barclays Premier League in May 2009.

Now Davis is looking to make a similar impact at Wanderers after accepting an invitation to follow Coyle to the Reebok when the manager was appointed to the role in January 2010.
