International Round-Up

Posted on: Mon 13 Oct 2008

There were wins galore for the five Bolton Wanderers stars in international action over the weekend.

Ricardo Gardner played the full 90 minutes in Jamaica's fantastic 1-0 victory over Mexico, a result that keeps the Reggae Boyz in with a shout of qualifying for the finals in South Africa. However, they will need to back that performance up with a similar display when they entertain Honduras in midweek.

Danny Shittu was also on the winning side when his Nigeria team triumphed 4-1 over Sierra Leone in Group Four of the African Qualification Zone.

Poland recorded possibly one of the finest results over the weekend by beating the Czech Republic 2-1 in Chorzow, with Ebi Smolarek playing the full game. The victory sees the Poles now top European Qualifying Group Three, with a trip to Slovenia to come on Wednesday.

Johan Elmander

Jussi Jaaskelainen kept a clean sheet as Finland beat Azerbaijan 1-0 in Qualification Group Four thanks to Mikel Forssell's second half penalty.

There was a 0-0 stalemate over in Solna between Sweden and Portugal with Johan Elmander returning the fold for Lars Lagerback's side following the hamstring injury which ruled him out of last month's clashes with Albania and Hungary.

Meanwhile Gretar Steinsson, Heidar Helguson, Adam Bogdan, Tamir Cohen and Fabrice Muamba didn't feature for Iceland, Hungary, Israel and England U21s respectively.

Joey O'Brien's Republic of Ireland host Cyprus on Wednesday evening after not having a game to contend with over the weekend.
