Megson Previews Tottenham Hotspur
There's no respite for Bolton Wanderers this weekend as the fixtures continue to come thick and fast in the Barclays Premier League. This Sunday the challenge that lies in wait is a trip to North London to face bottom placed Tottenham Hotspur.
Gary Megson addressed the media on Friday afternoon ahead of the weekend's encounter and this is what the Bolton Manager had to say about the prospect of pitting his wits against Juande Ramos...
Gary, how is the squad looking on the fitness front?
Tamir Cohen has come back into training but he is not particularly match fit because he has been out for a while. Everyone is fine aside from Ricardo Vaz Te who has a problem with his knee.
What are your views on Sunday's trip to London to play Spurs?
I think with all the goings on, it's made a difficult game even more difficult from our point of view. Everybody is having their two pennies worth on what Tottenham should be doing and the club is being backed into a corner and the players are being questioned, but that's going to galvanise them and get them playing in a way they've not played so far this season.
Therefore it makes it a very difficult game for us, but we've got to put that to the back of our mind and utilise what advantages we have got.
From your perspective, is scoring goals the key factor?
Our football in the main so far this season has been fine and there have been opportunities in nearly every game we've played where we should have scored and consequently because we haven't taken the opportunities we've created, we've put ourselves under pressure to be 100 percent in defence.
If you look back on all the games we've played so far this season, we will have missed one or two simple chances in every one.
A win at White Hart Lane would be a great way to celebrate your one-year anniversary with Bolton Wanderers.
I didn't realise it was a year to the day on Saturday but I do remember saying when I took the job that it's not about me, but the football club, the team and the supporters - and that always is.
It's still the same but I do believe the football club is improving and we've got to keep that improvement going so we can get back to where we want to be.
Is there a temptation to attack right from the off because of the lack of confidence within the Tottenham camp?
It's not a temptation because when we've got the ball we'll try to score and when we haven't we'll try and keep it out at the other end. A lot of other things will happen between that, but in our last home game we went to West Ham where they had won three out of three and we got a great result.
We have now got a different problem down at Tottenham because I do think you have got a wounded animal in that football club - everyone is criticising every single person who is involved with Tottenham.
As daft as it may seem, it is probably the biggest game of the weekend. I know Chelsea play Liverpool which is a huge game in itself, but I've never seen so much focus on one fixture at this stage of the season given where the two teams are in the division.
Is there extra motivation in the fact that you can add to a team's problems?
The way Tottenham are going is not purely down to Juande Ramos. He's gone in there and won their first trophy in quite a few years but everyone forgets that now.
But from our own point of view, we don't need any more motivation because wherever we go we want to get a good result. Whatever is going on at another football club isn't really an issue for us.
