Match Result: Bolton 0 Wigan 1
Bolton Wanderers v Wigan Athletic,
Sunday 28 December, 2008,
Barclays Premier League,
The Reebok Stadium, 2pm Kick-Off.
Final Score: Bolton Wanderers 0 Wigan Athletic 1 (Zaki (pen) 45)
90+3 mins - Riga drags his shot wide in what is Bolton's last chance of the afternoon. Seconds later and Phil Dowd blows for full-time. Wigan have taken all three points despite a second half onslaught by the Wanderers. Next up for Bolton is a trip to the Stadium of Light in the FA Cup next Saturday.
90+2 mins - Can you believe it! Danny Shittu heads against the crossbar in the dying minutes.
90+1 mins - Wigan make another substitution, taking off Zaki and introducing Michael Brown.
90 mins - Three minutes of stoppage time to be played at the end of the second half.
88 mins - It just doesn't seem to be happening for Bolton this afternoon. Steinsson can only volley over the crossbar following Matt Taylor's inswinging corner.
86 mins - Obadeyi is handed his Bolton debut as Gary Megson presses for an equaliser. Ricardo Gardner is the man who makes way. Wigan also make a change taking off Ryan Taylor and bringing on Kevin Kilbane.
82 mins - Steinsson sells Zaki a dummy before whipping in an inviting cross. Unfortunately Danny Shittu can't control the ball and it squirms away from the defender and out for a Wigan goal-kick.
81 mins - Lee Cattermole goes into Phil Dowd's notebook. It's the fifth yellow card of the afternoon.
80 mins - Wanderers force a succession of corners but Wigan clear their lines on both occasions.
74 mins - Steinsson, attempting an acrobatic volley, catches Scharner and Wigan have a free-kick inside their own penalty box.
69 mins - Matt Taylor has a shot saved by Pollitt with his weaker right foot. It's all Bolton at the minute.
67 mins - Ryan Taylor doesn't trouble Jaaskelainen with his 25 yard effort.
64 mins - A superb double save by Pollitt who firstly denies Davies and then Elmander. There's a double change by Gary Megson who withdraws Jlloyd Samuel and Kevin Nolan and brings on Riga and Fabrice Muamba.
62 mins - Ricardo Gardner slips at the crucial moment and his weak shot rolls through to Pollitt in goal.
57 mins - Valencia's wicked low cross is booted away by Steinsson. Wigan have a corner.
54 mins - The Bolton players and supporters claim a goal as Danny Shittu's near post header is cleared off the line. It looked like Palacios headed the ball away after it had crossed the line, but the linesman nor referee awarded the goal.
53 mins - Ryan Taylor's inswinging free-kick just evades the head of Scharner and bounces through to Jaaskelainen.
51 mins - Camara is crowded out by O'Brien but still manages to place a shot just wide of the post from the edge of the area.
46 mins - No changes by either manager at the break as Cattermole and Camara get the second half underway.
45+3 mins - Half-time at the Reebok.
45+2 mins - Kevin Nolan and Ricardo Gardner can't capitalise on hesitation in the Wigan box after Steinsson's long ball had found its way through the middle of Wigan's defence.
45 mins - Three minutes of stoppage time to be played.
45 mins - Goal for Wigan! Amr Zaki converts from the penalty spot to put Wigan ahead, sending Jaaskelainen the wrong way. The penalty had been given for a foul on Henri Camara by Andy O'Brien.
42 mins - Again Jaaskelainen denies Wigan, this time diving full length to his left to parry Lee Cattermole's stinging shot.
37 mins - Gavin McCann's left-foot volley is deflected wide for a corner.
34 mins - Henri Camara almost capitalises on a misplaced pass by Kevin Nolan. The Senegalise striker makes Jaaskelainen pull off a smart diving save.
33 mins - An early substitution by Steve Bruce. Emile Heskey is forced off with an injury and is replaced by Henri Camara.
30 mins - Palacios is booked for a mistimed tackle on Steinsson. Matt Taylor's resulting free-kick floats harmlessly wide of the far post.
28 mins - Steinsson is the second Bolton player to have his name taken by Phil Dowd.
27 mins - Danny Shittu's block falls invitingly for Zaki. Jussi is off his line in a flash to repel the Egyptian's shot.
25 mins - Kevin Nolan comes close with a poked volley from 20 yards. The ball floats just over the bar and Pollitt isn't troubled.
23 mins - Cries for a penalty by the Wigan supporters as Zaki takes a tumble under a Danny Shittu challenge. The referee sees nothing wrong with it and simply waves play on.
20 mins - What a block by Kevin Nolan. The skipper flung himself full length to block Ryan Taylor's goalbound effort from just outside the box.
17 mins - Paul Scharner does fantastically well to recover from a lapse in concentration. The Austrian had let the ball slip under his boot to Kevin Davies only five or so yards in front of goal. But the defender made amends with a superbly timed challenge on the recalled Bolton forward. Perhaps Davies took too long to get his shot away.
15 mins - Amr Zaki has Wigan's first real chance of the game, however his shot from 12 yards is charged down by Andy O'Brien.
12 mins - Matt Taylor blazes high over the crossbar following Elmander's knock-down. Good clinical move by Bolton.
8 mins - Bolton force a couple of early corners on the left flank. Wigan defend resolutely and clear their lines on both occasions.
6 mins - Kevin Nolan is brandished with the yellow card by Phil Dowd. He appeared to catch Wilson Palacios with a high boot. Play is stopped for a minute or two whilst the Wigan man receives treatment by the physio.
4 mins - Again Daviesd wins another free-kick after he is pulled to the floor by Titus Bramble. This time it's a lot closer and within shooting range. Matt Taylor has a crack but it's blocked by the Wigan wall.
1 mins - Within only a few seconds, Kevin Davies wins a free-kick 45 yards from goal. Andy O'Brien plays in a deep knock into the penalty box. There's a bit of a scamble and a shout for handball against Cattermole, but Phil Dowd is unmoved.
1.55pm - We are nearly set for kick-off. We've had the handshake, coin toss and photographs. Ricardo Gardner and Johan Elmander are ready to get the game underway.
1.50pm - Wigan seem to have brought quite a few spectators this afternoon, almost 3,000 of them are packed into the South Stand.
1.38pm - Don't forget that wherever you are in the world, whether it be Horwich or Honduras, you can listen to live uninterrupted commentary on Wanderers World. The broadcast started just under ten minutes ago so log in now to get live commentary direct to your computer.
1.37pm - Today's big stat. Bolton need to score three times to total 4,000 goals in top-flight football.
1.36pm - If results go Bolton's way this afternoon then the highest they can climb in the Premier League is eighth position, however a defeat for the Trotters and wins by teams in close proximity then Gary Megson's side could slip to 16th come the end of the day.
1.35pm - The referee for today's game is Phil Dowd. So far this season, the Staffordshire based official has taken control of 22 games. He has flashed 72 yellow cards and four reds. The last time he was the man in the middle for a game at the Reebok was back in October when Everton stole all three points with a last-gasp goal.
1.34pm - The teams have just been announced. Gary Megson makes two changes from the defeat at Anfield. Davies is back in attack whilst Shittu replaces the injured Gary Cahill.
Bolton: Jaaskelainen, Steinsson, Andy O'Brien, Shittu, Samuel, McCann, Nolan, Gardner, Taylor, Elmander, Davies (Subs: Al Habsi, Smolarek, Riga, Fojut, Basham, Obadeyi)
Wigan: Pollitt, Melchiot, Heskey, Figueroa, Bramble, Zaki, Valencia, Taylor, Palacios, Scharner, Cattermole (Subs: Kingson, Boyce, Kilbane, Brown, Camara, Koumas, De Ridder)
1.32pm - It's a big day for Tony Kelly. The Fans Liaison Officer played for both Bolton and Wigan, but he certainly knows where his loyalties lie this afternoon. In an interview in the matchday programme, Kelly says, "I still have a soft spot for Wigan and look out for their results but Bolton has always been the club that's close to my heart and I work for them now!"
1.30pm - Hello and welcome back to the Reebok for today's big North West derby between the Trotters and the Latics. There's no rest in the Premier League as only two days on from the defeat at Liverpool, Bolton have the opportunity to put the 3-0 reverse to bed against Steve Bruce's Wigan Athletic. An exciting afternoon lies ahead.
