Megson Previews Tottenham Hotspur

Posted on: Fri 30 Jan 2009

Tottenham Hotspur are the next visitors to the Reebok Stadium on Saturday afternoon in Wanderers' last game of January.

Gary Megson held his pre-match press conference on Friday morning ahead of the big showdown against Harry Redknapp's team.

Gary, how is it looking on the injury front?
Joey O'Brien, Nicky Hunt, Johan Elmander and Gavin McCann are all still out, so we are no different to what we were the other day. We came through the game at Blackburn physically unscathed.

What's the latest news surrounding the club's interest in Miguel Veloso?
That one is dead in the water now. They put a figure to us that was acceptable to them but not acceptable to us. So that one won't be happening, however we are trying one or two deals at the moment that have been going on anyway but it's whether we can get them done in time and whether the other clubs are willing to let them go.

Do you think that during this transfer window, asking prices of players has become hugely inflated?
It's not just this window, it happens all the time during January. Clubs don't want to lose their players and they ask for fees in which they would be laughing should they get that money.

The window in my view is nonsense - I've always thought so and each time it come along it becomes more evident that it is something that doesn't help football. Most of the transfers that are done in January are certainly inflated.

How would you assess the performances over the last few weeks?
We've been playing okay, but we've been caught cold against Arsenal with five minutes to go. It was the same against Manchester United with a minute to go and obviously on Wednesday with three minutes to go against Blackburn.

That game wasn't just about the last 15 minutes because they were well on top. We did a lot of things wrong in that period and it has over shadowed what we did right in the previous 70-75 minutes.

We've been to a team that is going well at the moment and that has got a new manager, and we've drawn 2-2. I can't say I was pleased about getting a draw having been two goals up, but that's where we are and now we go on from that point.

Do you think it's the little errors that are costing us?
We made errors for both goals that we conceded on Wednesday but whenever goals go against you, you always think there is something that you could have done better.

It was disappointing after being two goals up at half-time and even after quarter of an hour in the second half they hadn't had a shot that caused us any problems.

The first goal that they scored gave Blackburn the momentum and the crowd got into the game and we couldn't withstand the pressure that they put us under. That's something we've got to try and eradicate from our game.

We're playing Tottenham this weekend, a team that has spent a lot of money in this transfer window.
They have spent a lot of money in this window and they spent a lot of money during the last window too. They are a huge football club and they have internationals all over the show and they have full internationals that aren't even in the squad.

What they are doing in that part of the league table, I don't know but they are. I saw them play in midweek and they were terrific for 25 minutes against Stoke, so they are a really talented team with a really talented squad and it's a big game for us.
