Basham Thrilled To Be Off The Mark

Posted on: Mon 13 Apr 2009

Chris Basham notched his first Wanderers goal against Chelsea on Saturday afternoon and he is now hoping that it is the first of many.

The versatile midfielder, who came on as a second-half substitute for Johan Elmander, admitted after the full-time whistle that he was still coming to terms with the realisation of scoring at Stamford Bridge.

His close-range strike helped to set up a frantic end to the contest although at the time he didn't realise the significance that his goal made to the final outcome.

"It was unreal, but it was only really a consolation goal. I was still going to celebrate because it's my first ever Premier League goal - hopefully the first of many - and all my friends have text me to say well done.

"I haven't scored in the reserves all year so I wasn't expecting to score, but I gambled and now I can say that I've scored against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge with John Terry as a defender. It's unreal and a great experience for me."

Since making his debut at Sunderland back in November, Basham has gone on to star in seven Premier League games including appearances against Arsenal, Manchester United and now Chelsea.

The 20-year-old is delighted with the progress he has made this season and he admits that his achievements have exceeded his expectations.

He said: "When you see Deco and Anelka going on as substitutes, and then there's Chris Basham, it's a whole lot different. I came on and all I could do was give it my best and show a bit of enthusiasm and energy.

"It was outstanding that I could come on and we created three goals but we still got beat and it's still upsetting. But for me personally, I was really happy with what I achieved.

"Being young, I came on with enthusiasm and I'm playing against stars that I'm used to watching on the television.

"My aim this year was to try and make a few appearances in the cup, but now I have seven Premier League games under my belt. I still can't believe it myself when I think about it."
