Manager Focused On Short-Term Goal

Posted on: Tue 14 Apr 2009

With the end of the season just six weeks away, Gary Megson insists that his immediate focus is Wanderers' end to the 2008/09 campaign.

The Bolton boss is refusing to look past May 24, believing that there is still plenty of work to do for his players and management team before the campaign draws to its conclusion following the fixture against Manchester City.

Bolton currently occupy 12th position in the Barclays Premier League and whilst there is currently seven points separating them from the bottom three, Megson believes that they will need to add to their tally in the remaining six games.

Megson said: "We need some points first because I still think that whoever stays up will need more than 37 points. We've got to push on and get results.

"We've done okay so far and at the end of the season we can start talking about what has happened, but now is not the time. We've got to concentrate purely and simply on the short-term which is getting the points that we need."

Megson also acknowledged that Saturday's result at Stamford Bridge represented a courageous fight-back by his team, but he will be working with his players from a defensive perspective having conceded four goals to Guus Hiddink's men.

The manager added: "From a Bolton point of view it's great we have come back and managed to score three goals at Chelsea, regardless of the circumstances and how the goals went in.

"We also have to remember and work on the fact that we let four goals in and the four goals were poor defending. That is something I have not been particularly happy with this season and it's something we've got to improve both in the short-term which is the remainder of the season and onwards from there."
