Jaaskelainen: It Is My Job
Jussi Jaaskelainen added Saturday afternoon's game against Wigan Athletic to his long list of fine personal performances for Bolton Wanderers, but the Finland international explained that it was all in a day's work.
Typically modest, Jaaskelainen acknowledged that he was pleased with his efforts during the course of the stalemate at the JJB Stadium, however he was especially satisfied to see the team record their first clean sheet since the 1-0 victory over Newcastle United at the end of February.
The reliable shot-stopper, who is now in his 12th year at the club, made three world-class saves in the first half most notably a full length dive to repel a long-range effort from Mido.
"At the end of the day, it is my job to do that or someone else would be playing there," said Jaaskelainen, with a wry smile.
"I'm 34-years-old now and very experienced so that has helped to keep my consistency over the course of a long season. To be fair, it's a good thing that we kept a clean sheet because it is only our sixth of the season and that has been our weak point.
"Obviously when you come away from home it would be great to take three points, but in the first half we were a bit poor and didn't work as hard as Wigan did and that's why they had a little bit of pressure. That changed in the second half when we were able to play our game."
Indeed, Jaaskelainen's performance was made even more impressive after he required assistance from physiotherapist Andy Renshaw after he sustained a slight injury whilst making a save in the first few minutes of the game.
He explained: "The shot came very close to my body and I tried to get my left foot away but it got stuck in the grass and all of my body weight went through my knee. Luckily it didn't cause any damage - it was a bit sore but after a few minutes it got better."
Jaaskelainen is now targeting a big end to the campaign with two victories against Sunderland and Hull City rewarding the Bolton fans for their support over the course of the season.
He added: "The key is to go unbeaten now in our next two games and that will be crucial for where we are going to finish this season. We'll aim to pick up two wins but it will be tough because they (Sunderland and Hull City) are fighting relegation. We are confident that we will get positive results."
