Gretar: We Wanted To Spoil The Party
Speaking in the aftermath of the 1-1 draw with Hull City, Gretar Steinsson explained that it was Wanderers' failure to get the killer second goal which ultimately cost his team all three points on Saturday afternoon.
The Icelandic full-back, who notched the opening strike of the game with a sweet right foot shot, believes that if Bolton had doubled their lead when they had the opportunity then it would have been extremely difficult for the Tigers to claw themselves back into the contest.
As it was, a spirited second half fightback by Hull earned them an important point in their quest to avoid relegation to the Championship, but Steinsson believes that had to be expected considering their current plight.
He said: "They had everything to play for. We wanted to spoil the party but unfortunately we couldn't do that.
"There was a mistake at the beginning of the half. We should have been 2-0 up and then they come back at us and suddenly it's 1-1. They were fighting for their lives and we couldn't get the second goal.
"It's difficult because we know the teams we are playing against are fighting for their lives. We know what that is like from last season.
"But we are on a decent run and I don't think anyone can complain about that, although we should be winning more games."
In the recent fixtures against Wigan Athletic and Sunderland, Wanderers' second half performances had been much more explosive than their first, however Steinsson believes that Bolton took the game to Hull City right from the off.
He added: "As you saw in the second half last week, when we go after teams we play really well.
"We stared well this time but then in the second half it was more of a scrap. They were throwing everything up there and we couldn't create the chances."
