A youthful Wanderers side ran out convincing winners in their first match of pre-season, beating Leigh Genesis 4-1 at the Sports Village Stadium.

First-half goals by Zoltan Harsanyi, Tope Obadeyi and Danny Ward set the platform for the victory, before Chris Thompson pulled a goal back for the hosts after half-time.

Obadeyi's second strike of the game from the penalty spot on 78 minutes capped off a very useful outing against their near neighbours.

Indeed, a side comprising mainly of Wanderers reserve and youth players were given a good workout by Garry Flitcroft's side from the Unibond League.

Wanderers were 1-0 to the good on just five minutes. A deft ball over the Genesis defence by Danny Ward was seized upon by Michael O'Halloran, who picked out the on-rushing Zoltan Harsanyi. The Slovakian's dart into the penalty area went unmarked and his tidy finish from close range was unstoppable.

Only two minutes later and the Genesis goal was under attack once again as this time Tope Obadeyi controlled a cross from the left wing before hammering a snap shot that was excellently palmed over the bar by Steven Drench.

However, the England junior international only had to wait a further seven minutes to open his pre-season account. Michael O'Halloran was again the provider, cutting the ball back from the opposite flank for Obadeyi to smash into the back of net from the penalty spot mark.

With a dominance already asserted on the match, Wanderers' intense pace relented as the focus became on keeping possession.

A clinical move involving Joe Riley and Stuart McDonald resulted in Danny Ward taking a tumble 20 yards from goal, and from the resulting free-kick Sam Sheridan curled a low effort within the reach of goalkeeper Drench.

Adam Blakeman had a long-distance effort blocked, while former Wanderer and now player/coach at Leigh Matt Jansen caused a moment of panic for keeper Rob Lainton after charging down his clearance inside the six-yard area just after the half-hour mark.

The first half ended as it started with another Bolton goal. On 42 minutes Danny Ward made it 3-0 with an instinctive lob over Steven Drench. The Leigh stopper looked for an early release after saving from Obadeyi but his clearance was smashed into a clutch of bodies and Wanderers' young striker took full advantage by capitalising on the ricochet.

Another brisk start by the visitors after the interval almost reaped Obadeyi's second and Wanderers' fourth goal of the evening. Having been left totally unmarked inside penalty box, the athletic striker could only glance Sam Sheridan's corner across goal with Rhys Bennett unable to convert at the far post.

After a handful of changes at half-time, Leigh Genesis manager Garry Flitcroft opted to make a couple more ten minutes into the second period. The alteration in personnel earned his team their first goal of the evening when substitute Chris Thompson planted a low header past Rob Lainton on 58 minutes.

At this point Genesis were enjoying their brightest spell of the game, and they asked questions of the Bolton rearguard again shortly after when Dale Whitham's 25-yard shot drew Lainton into a save.

Joe Riley sliced wide halfway through the second-half and this was followed by a fractionally off-target attempt by Leigh's Andy Heald as the game continued to progress at a lively pace.

Nathan Battersby and Alex McQuaid replaced Stuart McDonald and Joe Riley on 75 minutes before Tope Obadeyi wrapped up the victory for the Trotters from the penalty spot 12 minutes before full-time. After being hacked down just inside the box, Obadeyi, who was arguably Bolton's man of the match, picked himself up off the ground to send substitute goalkeeper Jamie Waldron the wrong way and kill off the contest.

With Wanderers' first team heading for Germany and Holland later in the week, the majority of this youthful side will get their next run-out against Altrincham in the forthcoming friendly this Saturday.
