Report: Monchengladbach 1 Bolton 1
Wanderers' tour of Germany and Holland started in satisfactory style with a 1-1 draw against Borussia Monchengladbach.
An overall solid display was produced by Gary Megson's side in a game where 19 members of the first team squad got at least 45 minutes of action.
Gavin McCann had put the Trotters into a half-time lead, but Raul Bobadilla earned the Bundesliga club a share of the spoils 15 minutes from the end.
Gary Megson named only one of his summer recruits in the starting line-up with Sean Davis slotting into central midfield alongside Gavin McCann and Mark Davies in a 4-5-1 formation. With Jussi Jaaskelainen rested completely, Ali Al Habsi was selected in goal and Adam Bogdan named on the bench.
Monchengladbach carved out the first half-chance of the afternoon with a little under three minutes played. Argentinean striker Raul Bobadilla found space in behind Wanderers' rearguard but Andy O'Brien read the danger and cleared the ball upfield.
In general it was a patient start by both teams. Juan Arango fired a 30 yard free-kick wide of the post while Chris Basham, playing as a right midfielder, headed an inch perfect lofted pass by Mark Davies over the crossbar.
With Kevin Davies amongst the substitutes, Gary Cahill was selected as skipper and his first real action was to outmuscle Bobadilla off the ball ten yards from goal.
Halfway through the first period, Wanderers did string together a slick counter attack down the left-wing. Riga freed Gavin McCann and following an energetic 30 yard burst, the midfielder was unlucky not to pick out Chris Basham or Johan Elmander with a low cross through the six-yard box.
Having nearly been the provider, McCann's impact was even more substantial just a minute later as he opened the scoring with a crisp left-foot volley. Gary Cahill nodded down a floated ball into the penalty area, and after a moment of composure, the number 19 smashed Bolton into the lead.
Wanderers were now dominating possession and even though it was a pre-season friendly, the home supporters were becoming frustrated by the pattern of the game.
However, just three minutes before the break Monchengladbach almost levelled when Bobadilla's shot from an acute angle flew a couple of feet past the far post. Mark Davies did have his name taken for a trip on Thorben Marx on the stroke of half-time.
As expected, Gary Megson made a host of changes at the interval with eight players in total being replaced including the goalscorer Gavin McCann.
Juan Arango was the first to put substitute goalkeeper Adam Bogdan's goal under pressure in the second half, but the former Mallorca midfielder could only curl his free-kick harmlessly over the crossbar. The young Hungarian stopper did have opportunity to make a save when he confidently held Tobias Levels' low drive with an hour on the clock.
The first 20 minutes of the second half were largely dominated by the hosts, but they lacked the necessary quality in the final third - another off-target attempt by Arango the closest Monchengladbach came.
A trip on Chris Basham by Jean-Sebastien Jaures resulted in a free-kick for the Trotters 20 yards from goal on 68 minutes. It was ideal territory for a Matt Taylor special, but unfortunately it was a scuffed set-piece from the wide-man and the ball drifted wide of the post.
Monchengladbach equalised with a quarter of an hour remaining through Raul Bobadilla. Having looked like the hosts most likely threat through the entirety of the contest, the Argentine produced a neat finish having wriggled free from Danny Shittu with a clever shimmy.
Although the Trotters did enjoy the lion's share of possession in the final stages, they were unable to find the winner.
Adam Bogdan produced a fantastic last minute save to prevent former German international Oliver Neuville from grabbing a winner with a free-kick from 20 yards.
Next up for the Whites is a friendly with Den Bosch on Tuesday evening over the border in Holland.
