Bolton Wanderers continued their unbeaten start to pre-season as they came away from Tynecastle with a hard fought 1-1 draw against Hearts.

After a relatively quiet first half, the match came to life after half-time as Fabrice Muamba continued his impressive form at the U21 European Championships with a well taken goal.

But an almost instant reply from Christian Nade earned Hearts a share of the spoils.

However, it could have been the hosts who had come out victors if it hadn't been for a fantastic reflex save from Jussi Jaaskelainen and a glaring close-range miss by substitute Ardyvas Novikovas.

With Kevin Davies back in Bolton with his family following the birth of his child, Ricardo Gardner captained Wanderers on his return from Gold Cup duty, beginning the game occupying a central midfield berth alongside Fabrice Muamba and Sean Davis. Sam Ricketts was deployed on the right side on midfield with Gretar Steinsson playing behind the former Hull City man in defence.

Although this match was billed as a friendly, both sets of supporters needed no reminding that this was also Scotland versus England. The passion was transferred out on onto the playing surface with a few tough tackles flying in during the opening minutes, most notably by Ismael Bouzid on Johan Elmander and David Witteveen on Paul Robinson.

Powerful forward Christian Nade was the first to have an effort on goal. His low drive from the outside of the area on ten minutes was well claimed by Jussi Jaaskelainen.

A free-kick 30 yards from goal gave Matty Taylor a sight at the Hearts target, but he opted for power over placement and his left-footed drive rattled straight into the hosts' wall. The ball did however rebound to Fabrice Muamba and having taken a touch to beat Suso Santana, a low cross was fizzed into Johan Elmander, who prodded goalwards.

When Elmander was pushed to the ground illegally on 17 minutes, Sean Davis decided it was his turn to try his luck from a set-piece. Having successfully lifted the ball over Hearts' five-man barricade, he couldn't get his attempt to dip under the crossbar and it flew a couple of yards over Janos Balogh's goal.

The fierce tempo didn't relent and a couple of incidents involving Paul Robinson brought the home crowd to their voices midway through the first-half. Firstly, Santana caught Wanderers' new left-back with a stray arm and Robinson responded in the next period of play with a tough tackle on his opponent. Despite the Hearts faithful baying for blood, both players escaped a card and the intensity soon simmered.

Elmander and Gardner dragged long-range efforts wide of the goal within the space of two minutes of each other in a half that was devoid of any real clear cut scoring opportunities.

Whilst Wanderers were knocking the ball around confidently, scrappy defending by Csaba Laszlo's men prevented any goalmouth action in the penalty area. In total, the four free-kicks Bolton earned within shooting range were the closest they came to notching before the interval.

Witteveen volleyed over in the latter stages of the first half, completing a trouble-free first 45 minutes for Jussi Jaaskelainen on his return to the starting line-up.

Mark Davies was introduced at the break, replacing Gretar Steinsson. Sam Ricketts moved to defence, Davies slotted into midfield and Ricardo Gardner played on the right wing.

The first 15 minutes of the second half were action packed as Wanderers not only twice threatened to take the lead, they did get themselves ahead and then conceded an equaliser.

A snap-shot from Matty Taylor and a marauding run from midfield by Fabrice Muamba proved to be the catalyst before the England U21 international did break the deadlock.

Having endured a goalless first season with the Whites, Muamba found the far corner with a confident finish on 53 minutes after a clever flick by Elmander.

Three minutes later and Hearts were level. A cross from the right wing evaded Wanderers' defence and former Sheffield United striker Christian Nade thrashed home the equaliser from just inside the penalty area with a thumping first-time drive.

The action didn't end there as Johan Elmander almost restored Bolton's lead, forcing Balogh into a fantastic close-range save before Hearts had a penalty shout fall on deaf ears when Christian Nade took a tumble under Zat Knight challenge.

Jussi Jaaskelainen, four days before his testimonial against Hearts' city rivals Hibernian, showed just why he has enjoyed such a prolonged career at the top with a fantastic reflex save to deny Santana. The Spanish winger lashed in a low effort and the Bolton stopper flung himself down to his left to beat away what looked like a certain goal.

A series of substitutes from Hearts ensued, bringing the tempo of the match back to normality.

Mark Davies looked lively with a few jinking runs from midfield, but it was opposition substitute Arvydas Novikovas who wasted a golden chance to put his side ahead on 76 minutes. After ghosting in at the far post, the winger fluffed his shot from just three yards out, much to the despair of the home supporters gathered behind the Bolton goal.

Possession was shared equally in the latter stages, and although no more goals followed, both teams could be satisfied with their rigorous workout.
