Bolton 0 Hibernian 0
Bolton Wanderers ended their pre-season campaign with a stalemate against Scottish Premier League side Hibernian at the Reebok Stadium in Jussi Jaaskelainen's testimonial.
Jaaskelainen, received a fitting tribute from Bolton supporters as a reward for his 12 years of service. The proceeds of the game will go to three local charities, all of which were chosen by the big Finn and his wife.
Whilst being a day to honour Jaaskelainen's contribution during his career at Bolton, it also represented the final chance for Gary Megson to see his team in competitive action ahead of the season's opener against Sunderland next week.
The Bolton starting line up included four of Gary Megson's summer signings; with Zat Knight, Sean Davis, Sam Ricketts and Paul Robinson all taking their place in the team.
Bolton started brightly, with Fabrice Muamba, Sean Davis and Matt Taylor working tirelessly in midfield to deny the SPL side any time on the ball. Wanderers almost took the lead in the first five minutes, after a cross into the box from the right hand side was only narrowly headed wide by Jamaican international Ricardo Gardner.
Hibernian's first chance came just shy of the 15 minute mark, when a Derek Riordan free kick tested Jaaskelainen. The Finnish international was equal to it; comfortably pushing the ball to safety.
Bolton put the visiting defence under more pressure midway through the first half, with two dangerous Gardner crosses causing panic in the Hibernian defence. The loose ball fell to Sam Ricketts; who saw his shot blocked.
Ricardo Gardner was proving a constant source of danger to Hibernian, but his curling right foot shot went wide, following good work by Kevin Davies and Johan Elmander.
With less than 15 minutes to go in the first half, Bolton saw another half chance go begging, when Kevin Davies could only head over the bar, following Sam Ricketts' teasing cross. Only a couple of minutes later, Davies very nearly opened the scoring. A long ball from Paul Robinson towards the edge of the box was headed down by Gary Cahill. The ball fell to Davies, whose fine volley was destined for the bottom corner until Hibernian goalkeeper Yves Ma-Kalambay tipped the ball wide for a corner.
With 10 minutes of the first half to go, Hibernian almost took the league with an attempted lob by Colin Nish from 35 yards. The ball went wide but would have caused Jaaskelainen problems had it been on target; with the Finnish goalkeeper well off his line.
Bolton once again went close after 41 minutes, when an incisive move saw Kevin Davies head the ball down to Ricardo Gardner. His first time through ball was chased by Johan Elmander, who forced a decent save from Ma-Kalambay. The rebound fell to Paul Robinson, but his lob sailed over the bar, with the goalkeeper stranded.
Bolton came out for the second half bustling with energy, evident once again with the work of the energetic Muamba, who gained Wanderers a lot of possession. The first chance of the second half fell to Sean Davis, but his 25-yard drive was hit straight at the Hibernian goalkeeper.
With 25 minutes left, Matt Taylor, twice had sights of goal. The first was a difficult volley from 25 yards out, which went over the bar after a Johan Elmander knock-down. The same pair combined moments later to give Taylor a better sight of goal, but his shot from the right side of the box didn't test the Hibernian goal.
With 18 minutes left, Fabrice Muamba once again proved how important he is to the Wanderers side by winning possession again which created a chance for Elmander, but his left-foot strike from 20 yards was well saved. Two minutes later, Ricardo Gardner burst into the Hibernian box, but Ma-Kalambay was quick off his line to smother the danger.
As the game entered its closing stages, Gary Cahill had a gilt-edged opportunity to score after a cross was laid into his path by Matt Taylor, but his powerful 16-yard shot flew wide, with the keeper well beaten.
With five minutes to go, Jaaskelainen was called upon after a mix up between the Finnish international and Zat Knight gave Hibernian substitute David Wotherspoon a chance, but Jaaskelainen was equal to it and produced a good save.
Bolton pressed but couldn't force a winner and the game ended goalless; meaning Jaaskelainen kept a clean sheet on his big day, and Wanderers ended the pre-season campaign unbeaten.
