Manager Gary Megson is hoping that Fabrice Muamba can continue his impressive pre-season form into the new Barclays Premier League campaign.
The Under 21 international was a revelation at the recent European Championships, grabbing the headlines with a number of impressive midfield performances in England's run through to the final.
Indeed, Muamba's displays at the summer tournament didn't go unnoticed by national coach Fabio Capello, who named the former Birmingham City man in his recent 'long squad' for the friendly against Holland, of which Gary Cahill and Kevin Davies were a part of last season.
And Megson is confident that Muamba will be able to maintain those standards after an encouraging pre-season, which included a man of the match display in last Tuesday's draw with Heart of Midlothian.
Speaking in an interview to be aired on Wanderers Player later in the week, the Manager said: "Fabrice was in the long squad of 37 players, and I'm sure that is a result of his performances with England in the Under 21 Championships.
"He has come back buoyant, he looks confident and he has had a really good pre-season. Having said that, he did last year and his performance against Stoke was terrific in the first game of the season, but he couldn't attain those standards regularly. Hopefully he will be able to do that with another year's worth of experience.
"He is a young player and people tend to forget that he is not that old. It is the same with Mark Davies and Gary Cahill, so we have got quite a few young players in our squad, and I'm pleased about that."
