Manager Previews Hull City

Posted on: Thu 20 Aug 2009

Wanderers head to the KC Stadium on Saturday afternoon looking to repeat last season's 1-0 victory on Humberside.

Prior to the first away match of the season, manager Gary Megson addressed the local and national media at his pre-match press conference…

Gary, what response will you be looking for from last Saturday's defeat against Sunderland?
I want the players to start against Hull like they finished against Sunderland. We were taking the game to them, playing at a much higher tempo even though we weren't playing champagne football. We've lost our first game of the season and we need to get back on track as quickly as we can.

It is early days and we played a back-four, of which three have never played together before, and on the other side Sunderland played really well. They enjoyed a 20-minute spell when they were on top but then after that it was two evenly matched teams. It was unfortunate that we didn't score and that shows the importance of scoring the first goal.

Lee Chung-Yong made his debut as a second half substitute. Were you pleased with what you saw when he was introduced?
It was difficult for him because he didn't arrive until last Thursday night. He has got a good touch and good awareness but he is going to need time to develop his physical strength. Technique-wise he has got everything going for him so the raw material is there. He needs to play so we decided to play him in the Lancashire Cup final in midweek.

It's great news that Kevin Davies and Matt Taylor have signed new long-term contracts, following in Gary Cahill's footsteps.
They are happy to commit to the club and we are happy to have them here. They are both excellent players who are big influences on and off the field. The two of them contributed 22 goals last season, but they haven't scored for a while and we need them to get back on track.

What do you make to Hull City's start to the season?
They've played Chelsea away from home and not many teams are going to Stamford Bridge and get a result. That happened to Hull, but I actually thought they were a bit unfortunate.

Wednesday night was difficult to assess because Tottenham were superb. The movement of Jermain Defoe and Robbie Keane up front and Aaron Lennon and Luka Modric from the wings caused Hull a lot of problems. Plenty of teams would have struggled to contain them.

Saturday will be a difficult game because although Hull eventually got well beat, the crowd stuck with them and created a fantastic atmosphere. That's a big thing for them and it will make it a really tough task for us.

It will be a big day for Sam Ricketts, who is going back to his former club so soon after leaving.
It will be, but there is an assumption there that he will be playing. We are expecting Gretar back in this morning, so we will see what the right thing is to do nearer the time. If Sam does play, then obviously it will be a big day for him.

Quite often when players go back to their old clubs they get so engrossed in all the things that don't matter that they don't play particularly well. I think it happened one or two of our players last season. What they have to do is concentrate on putting in a performance and winning the game.

Finally Gary, how's it looking with the injuries?
Gretar has been poorly but hopefully he should be okay. Ricardo will be out for two or three weeks, which is unfortunately for him and certainly for ourselves because he would have started against Sunderland.
