Manager Previews Spurs

Posted on: Thu 01 Oct 2009

Wanderers are back on home soil on Saturday afternoon looking to build upon the victories against West Ham United and Birmingham City in the last two outings.

Prior to the clash at the Reebok Stadium, the local and national media attended the Manager's pre-match press conference…

Gary, with September drawing to an end, how happy was you with Bolton Wanderers' performances and results over the last month?
Performance-wise, I've been pleased with us in every game apart the first 45 minutes against Sunderland and Stoke City. Results-wise, we could have done better since the start of the season, but in September, we've done fine.

It is not simply about performances though - it is about getting those results. But obviously you want those results to be allied with a good standard of performance on a regular basis.

We move on to October, which on paper is a very challenging month of fixtures. That starts with Tottenham Hotspur this Saturday.
It has worked out the same way as last year where we are playing teams in the next six games that all finished in the top-half last season. So it is going to be difficult, but we turned Tottenham over last season on our home patch and hopefully we can do the same again.

We want to keep the momentum going as long as we can, confidence is high and the determination is there to do that.

What do you make of Spurs' start to the season?
They had a good opening day win against Liverpool at White Hart Lane and I watched their second game of the season away at Hull City.

They were scintillating that day and Hull just couldn't cope with Robbie Keane, who kept dropping into the hole. The pace of Jermain Defoe caused lots of problems and they were convincing winners. It was as good of a performance as I've seen in a long time.

Spurs have a variety of strikers at their disposal, all of which seem to be in good form. Would a clean sheet on Saturday be an extra fillip?
Well that is going to be a tough task anyway, but we would love to keep a clean sheet. I would certainly prefer to win 2-1 though than have a nil-nil draw.

People say and write things about all football clubs, and what is being said at the moment is that we haven't kept clean sheet in the Premier League this season. The other side of that is that we have scored more goals than we have done for a lot of seasons at this stage.

How is looking with Johan Elmander, who unfortunately limped out of the reserves win over Wigan on Monday evening?
Johan has had a scan and it's not too bad. They grade hamstring injuries from one to four, and his is a grade one.

If you are going to have a hamstring strain then that is the best one to have, although of course we would rather he was fit.

He won't be available for the Spurs game and he is doubtful for the international fixtures, but he won't be sidelined for too long.
