Evans Looks Ahead To Lincoln

Posted on: Thu 31 Dec 2009

Following the announcement by the club on Wednesday, Assistant Manager Chris Evans and Head Coach Steve Wigley have been handed the task of looking after first team matters in the interim period.

Evans spoke to the media on Thursday morning ahead of the FA Cup third round clash with Lincoln City at the Reebok Stadium.

Chris, you start off this weekend with the FA Cup tie against Lincoln.
The Chairman has asked Steve Wigley and I to look after this interim period before a new manager is appointed. That will work in as much that I will have overall responsibility for the football operations and Steve will continue to coach and select the team. We both come from similar backgrounds, we have a good relationship and we will work hard together.

Likewise there is Alan Cork, so there is a lot of experience here. We have some great staff and it is as good as it gets in terms of the dressing room team spirit.

First and foremost we have to sit down with the players and staff and let them know about the change and what is going to be expected. We'll set about each game as it comes and the FA Cup match is the next one in line.

Obviously we will want to get on an even keel now and work in an atmosphere that is going to be conducive to helping us put in a good performance against Lincoln.

How important is it that we don't underestimate our opponents on Saturday?
We are very respectful of Lincoln and you can't underestimate any team. But we will be concentrating on our side of things and we need to make sure that we are in the right frame of mind, are well organised, that we have a work ethic about us and that we have a belief.

Steve will make sure that happens on the training ground and on Saturday afternoon at the Reebok.

And we are entering the game on a decent run of form having remained unbeaten in the last four matches?
Statistics can be dressed up in any way that you want to do so and I'm all for the half-full glass. We have only been beaten once in six and have gone ahead in 10 of our 18 Premier League games, and out of those we have won four, drawn five and only lost once.

So we know that there are areas that we have to strengthen but we want to continue to work on the positives as well.

And finally Chris, what's the team news for Saturday?
Obviously for now we are taking it one day at a time. We are going to go out and have a good training session today (Thursday) and we'll take it further from then on.
