Coyle's Sunderland Review

Posted on: Wed 10 Mar 2010
Owen Coyle was left to rue Sunderland's lightning start as Wanderers' fortunes turned from the victory at Upton Park just four days earlier.

The Whites were unable to gain a foothold on the contest after they had been stung by a goal inside the first minute by Fraizer Campbell.

And despite a strong showing, their performance wasn't rewarded with goals they deserved.

The Manager said: "To concede a goal so early obviously gave Sunderland a tremendous lift, but we picked ourselves up and went in search of an equaliser. Unfortunately, we never got it.

"Some things went against us throughout the course of the game and while certainly not begrudging Sunderland the win, the scoreline flattered them tonight.

"From our point of view we are disappointed coming off the back of the wins against Wolves and West Ham which had pushed us up the table.

"So we came into this game in good form, and that showed at the start of the second half when we were the team in the ascendency.

"We are disappointed that we didn't work Craig Gordon given the amount of possession that we had and ultimately we have paid a heavy price for that.

"We are out of the bottom three but we remain in a tight battle and, as I have said, the margins remain fine. We've now got a massive game at the Reebok on Saturday and we will look to build on our good home form."
