Kevin Davies described the 4-0 victory over Wigan Athletic as a 'brilliant day'.

After Johan Elmander's opening goal, the skipper doubled Wanderers lead just after half-time with the first penalty of his professional career.

His calm finish from 12 yards was added to with Fabrice Muamba's first strike for Bolton Wanderers before Matt Taylor wrapped up the three points.

"There were a lot of positives that came out of that game today," beamed the captain.

"We took a bit of a thumping in midweek so to come back and beat Wigan at home, after their victory over Liverpool, is a great acheivement.

Davies Penalty Wigan

"Since the Gaffer took over we've only had one disappointing performance. We've been creating a lot of chances and today they all went in for us."

Davies' penalty was converted with relative ease but he revealed that there was a touch of anxiety when he placed the ball on the spot.

He explained: "Obviously Matt's (Taylor) been out of the side and he's our usual penalty taker.

"I'd been thinking about practising in training and have had a bit of banter with him, but I never got round to it really.

"But today no one seemed overly keen to take it. I felt confident, got the ball and because Chris (Kirkland) went down early, I managed to put it in the other corner.

"It was a bit nerve-wracking, I must admit, but I was delighted it went in because it was an important goal for us at that time."
