Gary Cahill is delighted to back in the first team frame after spending a spell on the sidelines.

The central defender returned to day-to-day duties at Euxton on Tuesday morning after being given the all-clear to resume full training as he continues his recovery from a blood clot in his left arm.

Speaking exclusively to Wanderers Player, the Sheffield-born star revealed that he is confident he will soon be back up to full speed.

"Obviously it was nice to be back outside with the lads instead of doing work in the gym," said Cahill.

"Work on the bike and the treadmill is different compared to when you are back with the ball, doing the short and sharp stuff.

"Everyone wants to get out playing football, so hopefully I can get a good week of training under my belt.

"It's a case of working hard and getting back up to match sharpness. It's not been the longest injury or illness, so it has been easy to slot straight back in.

"But you are bound to lose a little bit of your fitness because obviously you have been out of the game. Your decision making is sometimes slightly off when you have been out for a period but that will come back really quickly.

"Nothing is better than playing games when you are fit so hopefully I can play a part in the rest of the season, and I'm looking forward to it now."

Manager Owen Coyle welcomed the central defender back into his squad, adding:
"It's terrific to have Gary back training with the group.

"We are all very pleased with his progress and we will keep monitoring him and then take it from there."
