North America Tour Announced

Posted on: Fri 28 May 2010

Bolton Wanderers have announced that they will embark on a tour to North America, playing friendlies against Charlotte Eagles, Charleston Battery and Toronto FC as part of their upcoming pre-season schedule.

The visit will begin in the United States in North Carolina, where the Whites will play Charlotte Eagles on Wednesday 14 July.

The squad will then head to South Carolina for the fixture with Charleston Battery on Saturday 17 July before finally travelling to Canada to play Toronto FC on Wednesday 21 July.

Wanderers Manager Owen Coyle said: "A pre-season tour is a vital part of our footballing calendar. It gives us a chance to spend time together as group and that can only be of benefit to us in the long term."

Please note that a venue and kick-off time for all three of these friendlies have still to be confirmed.

Charlotte Eagles
The Eagles were founded in 1991 and currently ply their trade in the USL Second Division. They are coached by Mark Steffens and have won the USL2 title twice in 2000 and 2005.

The North Carolina based club, who play their home matches at the Restart Field, currently have two English born players in their squad, Kieren Keane and Joseph Connor.

Charleston Battery
Wanderers will become the first English Premier League team to tackle Charleston Battery when they do so on Saturday 17 July. Battery are also members of the USL Second Division.

Both clubs have one former player in common - Nicky Spooner, who played for the Whites from 1989 to 1998 and the Battery between 1999 and 2000. Other notable players who represented the South Carolina club include Terry Phelan, Eric Wynalda, Robert Rosario and Omar Daley.

Toronto FC
The Whites will take on Toronto FC in the Carlsberg Cup - an annual friendly between the hosts and a guest club. Last season River Plate of Argentina defeated Toronto FC 4-3 on penalties to take the trophy.

The Reds play their football in the Eastern Conference of the MLS, and only founded four years ago in 2006. They regularly have over 20,000 fans attending their home matches which are played at the BMO Field.

Toronto are coached by Preki, who had a short spell as a player at Everton between 1992 and 1994. The most notable players to have played for the club include Laurent Robert, Danny Dichio and Olivier Tebily.
