O'Brien Calls For A Response In Scotland

Posted on: Thu 29 Jul 2010

Joey O'Brien says that Wanderers will look to cast aside the disappointing result at Oldham with improved performances on the mini-tour to Scotland this weekend.

The Whites head north of the border tomorrow ahead of games against Falkirk and St Johnstone on Saturday and Monday respectively.

O'Brien expects tough encounters with the Scottish sides but is confident that the defeat at Boundary Park will be out of their system once they have returned to English soil.

"We are all disappointed to come to Oldham and get beat," said the versatile midfielder.

"You don't want to get a result like that at any time, but it is better that we have got it now rather than later on in pre-season.

"It makes you realise what is fast approaching. Now we have to learn from it and step it up going into the next few games ahead of the start of the season.

"We are going to go up to Scotland and we know that it will be difficult - Scottish clubs always like to get an English scalp, especially that of a Premier League club.

"We went up to there a few years ago to play Hibernian and then we played them again last year for Jussi's testimonial. Plus there was the friendly at Hearts.

"They were tough games, so we know that we have got to be on our toes, play a lot better and hopefully a couple of good results will bounce us into the Osasuna friendly."

O'Brien has gradually stepped up his fitness over the last four weeks of pre-season after almost two seasons on the sidelines with a serious knee injury.

And the 24-year-old is happy with the progress he has made so far.

He added: "I'm still on the comeback trail so obviously it is good for me to play another 45 minutes. I've got three halves of football and 20 minutes against Rochdale under my belt now.

"The manager has been giving me minutes and that is all I have really needed after two years out. It's going to take a right few games before I'm fully fit, but it's been a gradual progression and I'm starting to feel the benefits.

"The first game I didn't think I would last the half because I was blowing after about 25 minutes, but at Oldham I felt pretty strong when it was coming around to half-time.

"The next aim is to get 90 minutes and see where I am then."
