Falkirk Preview

Posted on: Fri 30 Jul 2010

Wanderers' pre-season schedule roles into Scotland this weekend with their mini-tour north of the border commencing at Falkirk.

Manager Owen Coyle takes a full strength squad with him to his native homeland, one which includes Marcos Alonso.

The defender, who signed in at the Reebok earlier in the week, has trained with his new-team mates over the last couple of days and could be set to feature in some capacity either on Saturday at Falkirk Stadium or on Monday evening against St Johnstone.

Falkirk are managed by former Scotland international defender Steven Pressley. The 36-year-old brought his long and successful playing career to an end with the Bairns at the end of the 2008/09 season before he accepted a coaching position at the club.

When Eddie May resigned in February of this year Pressley was appointed boss, however he was unable to keep Falkirk in the Scottish top-flight with a nil-nil draw at Kilmarnock on the final day of the season sealing their relegation.

This friendly is Falkirk's final fixture of pre-season ahead of their Scottish First Division opener against Dunfermline Athletic next weekend.

Wanderers Assistant Manager Sandy Stewart knows plenty about Falkirk from his time as a player and manager in Scotland, and he expects nothing less than fiercely fought encounter.

Speaking at Wanderers training ground on Friday, ahead of the journey, he said: "Any English team that goes up to Scotland in pre-season are always in for a tough game because the Scottish teams believe that it is their time to show what they can do.

"Falkirk were a bit unfortunate to lose their Premier League status last year, so they will be fired up and will look to bounce back at the first time of asking after having four or five years in the top-flight.

"They have brought in some new players and I know that their manager is happy with the players that have arrived. Several players have left from last season - the ones he wanted to lose - so he will feel that the team is better equipped this year.

"They are young and energetic with a little bit of experience, so there will be all the ingredients for a very good game.

"The League Cup in Scotland starts this weekend but with Falkirk being a Premier League Cup last season then they are seeded and so don't start until the next round. They will be looking to add the final touches to their pre-season programme ahead of their first league match next Saturday."

Bolton fans heading up to the game with will located in the North Stand at the 9,000 all-seater Falkirk Stadium. Admission prices are £15 for adults and £8 for concessions. Kick-off is at 3pm.

Please note that there will be no commentary on Wanderers Player for both the matches against Falkirk and St Johnstone due to technical and logistical reasons. The broadcast will return for the visit of Osasuna to the Reebok Stadium on Friday 6 August.
