Wanderers 2 Osasuna 0

Posted on: Sat 07 Aug 2010

Wanderers head into the season opener against Fulham on the back of a three-match unbeaten run after an impressive 2-0 win over Osasuna.

A tidy finish from Johan Elmander and a headed goal from Chung-Yong Lee in the first-half saw off the La Liga side in front of 4,847 fans at the Reebok.

The game was effectively won after 26 minutes following the two early goals, and although Osasuna posed more of a threat in the second-half, the result was never in doubt.

A third clean sheet in succession was another reassuring sign for Owen Coyle, who couldn't really have asked for much more in the final friendly of pre-season.

The manager had hinted prior to kick-off that his line-up for the game would be a pointer towards his team for the opening game against Fulham.

Having tried a range of formations throughout pre-season, a 4-4-2 system was implemented, with Johan Elmander selected to partner Kevin Davies in attack.

And the Sweden international carried on where he left off at McDiarmid Park on Monday by putting the Whites in front with just 11 minutes played - his third strike of pre-season.

It was route one football at its best with Kevin Davies providing a headed assist from Jussi Jaaskelainen's long punt forward. Elmander composed himself with an excellent touch around Osasuna skipper Flano before pivoting and lashing into the bottom corner of the net from just inside the penalty area.

But it could have been the visitors who had taken an early lead as moments before Elmander's opener, Jussi Jaaskelainen had raced from his line to dive at the feet of Walter Pandiani after the former Birmingham City man had beaten the offside trap.

The early goal had given Wanderers the platform to really express themselves on the lush new Reebok pitch and given the extremely promising start it was no surprise to see the lead doubled just after the first-half's midway point.

What was unusual about the second goal was the manner in which it came as Chung-Yong- recognised for his silky skills rather than his aerial ability - powered a well-taken header past goalkeeper Riesgo from the penalty spot mark.

Kevin Davies found himself wide on the left touchline and he delivered a pinpoint inswinging cross which Wanderers' South Korean winger guided into the back of the net, via the help of the crossbar.

There could have been further goals before the break as Elmander headed wide and Martin Petrov drilled a right-footed thunderbolt across goal, but it was a faultless first 45 minutes for Wanderers, who had restricted their opponents to nothing after Pandiani's early chance.

Elmander was at the heart of every attack and five minutes after the restart, a little more selfishness could have resulted in another notch on the 28-year-old's pre-season goal tally.

Having done exceptionally well to beat the offside trap, he opted to square across goal, where Kevin Davies and Petrov were lying in wait, instead of firing in an effort himself.

Osasuna began to offer a little more as the second-half progressed and twice in quick succession the Spaniards worked the Bolton defence.

Firstly, an instinctive near post flick from Hungarian striker Vadocz was excellently parried by Jaaskelainen and then striker Soriano unleashed a skidding drive which was only a yard wide of the post.

After an hour, Owen Coyle made a precession of changes with no less than seven new faces taking to the field to get another 30 minutes of match action under their belt.

Robbie Blake, Marcos Alonso, Sam Ricketts, Matt Taylor, Adam Bogdan, Ricardo Gardner and Jlloyd Samuel were all drafted on in place of Johan Elmander, Jussi Jaaskelainen, Gretar Steinsson, Paul Robinson, Chung-Yong Lee, Martin Petrov and Gary Cahill.

Ten minutes later and another three changes ensued with Fabrice Muamba, Stuart Holden and Kevin Davies all leaving the fray.

Sandwiched in between the two sets of substitutions was Osasuna's best chance of the evening. Substitute Echaide rattled the upright from close-range, and when the follow-up landed at the feet of Sola, Bogdan continued his impressive pre-season form with a fine block.

The rest of the contest was played at a leisurely pace with each team seemingly happy with their evening's work.

Owen Coyle will now hope that his international stars return injury free and that t
hey can continue this momentum when Fulham visit in eight days time - the fifth year in succession that the Whites will start a domestic season with a game at the Reebok.
