International Round-Up

Posted on: Wed 08 Sep 2010
A handful of Wanderers' international stars were in action for their respective countries on Tuesday evening.

Johan Elmander came off the bench with 21 minutes remaining as Sweden beat San Marino 6-0 to go top of Group E in the Euro 2012 qualifiers. Zlatan Ibrahimovic was on the scoresheet twice, there were also goals for Pontus Wernbloom, Andreas Granqvist and Marcus Berg, while Davide Simoncini put through his own goal.

Tamir Cohen played an hour in Tbilisi as Israel were held to a scoreless draw with Georgia, a result which leaves them in second place in Group F after two matches.

Gary Cahill was named on the bench but didn't get the opportunity to earn his second senior cap in England's 3-1 victory over Switzerland in Group G. Wayne Rooney opened the scoring early on and Adam Johnson doubled the lead after half-time. Xherdan Shaqiri halved the deficit before Darren Bent rounded off the victory.

It was the same story for Fabrice Muamba as he was also an unused substitute in England U21s 3-0 victory over Lithuania. Two goals from Danny Welbeck and another from Marc Albrighton sealed the win which ensures England secure a play-off berth for a place at next summer's European Championships.

And, Lee Chung-Yong was a part of the South Korea team which slipped to a narrow 1-0 defeat against Iran in a friendly Seoul. Massoud Shojaei was the match winner with a goal on 35 minutes.
