Gary Megson has allayed any concerns surrounding the fitness of Fabrice Muamba.

The midfielder started for England U21s on Friday night in the European Qualifier against Portugal, but was replaced by Lee Cattermole on 56 minutes after taking a blow to his ankle.

With the hosts leading 1-0 at the time thanks to James Milner's penalty, withdrawing the £5m summer signing was deemed as the sensible option to avoid any further injury risk.

Muamba himself had earned the spot-kick after taking a tumble inside the Portuguese box under a mistimed tackle from Paulo Machado.

Speaking about Muamba, Megson said: "Fabrice is alright - he just got a kick. He'd been booked anyway so they just thought it was prudent to take him off, so it's not a major problem.

"He got a kick on his ankle and just jarred it."
