A second-half brace by Everton new-boy Jo helped to consign Wanderers to a 3-0 defeat at Goodison Park.
Mikel Arteta had set the Toffees on their way on 38 minutes, when he stepped up to convert a penalty following Andy O'Brien's foul on Jo.
And then just after the restart, the Brazilian doubled Everton's lead with a low shot from just inside area, before again netting in front of the Park End fans in stoppage time with the second penalty of the game.
It was a disappointing afternoon for Gary Megson's men, who couldn't replicate the display shown only seven days earlier at the Reebok against Tottenham Hotspur.
Gary Megson made one change ahead of the game with the injured Ricardo Gardner unable to take his place in the starting line-up. Andy O'Brien, who had been left out of the last two matches, was recalled in the Jamaican's place, in what was a re-jigged 4-4-2 formation. Gretar Steinsson pushed forward onto the right side of midfield and O'Brien slotted in at right-back.
Everton came out of the blocks the quickest and could have taken the lead inside the first three minutes through Tim Cahill. Inexplicably, the Australian skimmed a header wide of the far post from only four yards out after Leighton Baines put the ball on a plate with an inch perfect cross.
It was a half dominated by the home side and they had further opportunities to open the scoring firstly through Jo and then Mikel Arteta.
The on-loan Manchester City striker raced clear and shot wide on 24 minutes after having a clear run on goal, and then ten minutes later the Everton midfielder tested Jussi Jaaskelainen with a skidding shot from distance.
The closest that Bolton came to scoring was when Fabrice Muamba, still looking for his goal in Bolton colours, fizzed a volley only a few yards wide of the post from 20 yards.
The deadlock was broken seven minutes before half-time, when Mikel Arteta converted from the penalty spot. Jo fell rather theatrically under a challenge from Andy O'Brien inside the box, but Peter Walton felt that he had seen enough to point to the spot. Jaaskelainen dived in the correct direction, however the Spaniard placed his kick high into the top corner and the ball just evaded his full stretched attempt.
It could have been two shortly after when Phil Jagielka glanced a header against the crossbar and then Joleon Lescott placed the rebound weakly into the side netting.
And then not for the first time this season, Wanderers were left thanking Gary Cahill for an excellent defensive block in the final moments of the first half. When Mikel Arteta blazed in an effort from 30 yards, the ball stuck at the feet of Leon Osman inside the area. It looked for all the world that the little midfielder was about to bury past Jaaskelainen until Cahill threw himself in front of the ball, which ricocheted over the crossbar for a corner.
Any plans Gary Megson had at half-time would have been ripped up only three minutes after the restart when Jo netted on his debut.
The pacy forward latched onto a speculative long knock over the top and firstly controlled the ball, before turning Gary Cahill and smashing a low left-foot shot under Jussi Jaaskelainen from the edge of the penalty area.
Everton at this point were well in their stride and continued to create further opportunities through Cahill and Gosling, but Bolton started to show signs that they could get back into the game.
Makukula headed wide, Matt Taylor forced Tim Howard into making a decent parried save and Kevin Davies also worked the American in a bright 15-minute spell inspired by the introduction of the lively Chris Basham.
For their pressure, Bolton couldn't score and the defeat was capped off in stoppage time when Jo netted for a second time with another Everton penalty. Mark Davies was very harshly adjudged to have handled inside the area, and the Brazilian stepped up from 12 yards to place the ball past Jaaskelainen.
