Wanderers ended their eighth successive season in the Barclays Premier League with a narrow 1-0 defeat away to Manchester City.

A well taken goal by Felipe Caicedo on seven minutes was the only difference at Eastlands as both sides fought out a local derby with passion and pride.

Wanderers carved out their fair share of chances, with Gary Cahill yet again unfortunate to see a goalbound effort cleared off the line, for the fourth successive weekend.

After finishing 13th in the table, Wanderers tallied more wins, points and goals as they built on last season's consolidation to ensure further progress was made this season.

Danny Shittu was the only real doubt in the days leading up to the game, but he shrugged off a mild bout of concussion leaving Gary Megson the option of selecting an unchanged side.

After a steady opening to proceedings, Manchester City fans were off their seats in anticipation on six minutes when Shaun Wright-Phillips managed to wriggle away from a couple of challenges before firing straight into the arms of Jaaskelainen.

A minute later and the hosts were ahead. Gretar Steinsson was adjudged to have fouled 30 yards from goal and from the following set-piece, Felipe Caicedo converted from close-range. Robinho lined up a long-range attempt but instead of shooting he opted for a square ball to Stephen Ireland, who chipped a pass over Wanderers defence into Micah Richards. The England defender did excellently to volley the ball across the six-yard box for Caicedo to slot past Jaaskelainen.

There was nothing that the Finland international could have done about the goal, but his services were needed in City's next attack. The 34-year-old was called upon to make a full stretch save, tipping a stinging Shaun Wright-Phillips thunderbolt over the crossbar.

Despite a bright start from the Citizens, Bolton were still offering encouraging attacks of their own, mostly through the overlapping runs of Gretar Steinsson from right-back. A penalty shout for handball against Caicedo had Mark Clattenburg unmoved, while a fizzing cross by Steinsson somehow evaded a host of Wanderers attackers inside the City penalty box.

It took 26 minutes for City's record signing Robinho to have his first significant impact on the contest. After a powerful 40 yard run from Caicedo, the ball worked its way over to the Brazilian, who smashed in an effort that crashed against the outside of the post.

It was soon followed by his second telling contribution, which was a flamboyant overhead flick that resulted in Jaaskelainen palming a Micah Richards shot around the post. And then his third - a shimmy and shot that Bolton's goalkeeper had no problem clutching onto.

For the fourth game in succession Gary Cahill was dealt a touch of hard luck in the final third when a skidding volley was cleared off the line, only for the rebound to fall very fortunately into the arms of Shay Given who was lying on the turf.

Half-time passed without any substitutions, as Bolton came out after the interval with the more urgency. Fabrice Muamba had a close-range header cleared from under the City crossbar while Matt Taylor's ambitious volley from outside the penalty box floated harmlessly too high.

Another robust dribble from Steinsson helped to produce arguably Bolton's slickest move of the game on 53 minutes, which culminated in Muamba shooting fractionally too high.

With Wanderers in the ascendency, Gary Megson implemented his first tactical change of the afternoon as Chris Basham was introduced into midfield at the expense of Matt Taylor just before the hour mark. At this point the conditions were starting to play a part too, with a number of drinks intervals slowing the tempo.

On 70 minutes, Gavin McCann played a vital part in keeping the scoreline at 1-0 by producing a last-ditch challenge to stop Micah Richards from hammering home a shot, and then in the following attack Wright-Phillips' curling attempt lacked accuracy.

Wanderers' fans, all 2,500 of them, remained in fine voice throughout the entire afternoon and they were almost rewarded for their efforts with a little under ten minutes remaining. Chris Basham did well to create an opening for himself down the right flank, he crossed to Mark Davies, who headed the ball into the path on the onrushing McCann and the midfielder's shot was charged down, frustratingly, from a matter of yards.

Jaaskelainen tipped a piledriver from Robinho over the bar, Kevin Davies' chipped onto the roof of the netting and substitute Riga acrobatically volleyed wide in the latter stages.

Three minutes of injury time failed up conjure up another opening as Mark Clattenburg brought proceedings to an end. It was a spirited effort by the Bolton players, who marched over to the away section of the City of Manchester Stadium to thank their travelling supporters for their vocal encouragement on the road, not only in this game but the season itself.

A busy summer is no doubt expected at the Reebok in readiness for the start of next season, which commences on August 15.
