Kevin Davies was the hero for the Whites, as in his first game as club captain, he struck a match-winning brace to seal a thoroughly deserved 3-2 victory over Tottenham Hotspur.

His second goal came with less than three minutes left on the clock after Spurs had fought back from being two goals down to get themselves back into the contest.

Sebastien Puygrenier marked his full home debut with a headed opening goal in the first half, before Kevin Davies doubled the lead with a well taken finish midway through the second period.

However, substitute Darren Bent netted twice in three minutes to even the scoreline in what looked destined to be a carbon copy of the midweek draw at Ewood Park.

But in the dying minutes, Davies nodded in a Matt Taylor corner to give Wanderers their first win in seven matches and condemn Tottenham to their sixth defeat at the Reebok in eight seasons.

The afternoon also marked the emergence of Mark Davies in the Premier League, who was handed his first start since moving from Wolverhampton Wanderers in midweek. His instant impact, coupled with his namesake's performance, was the talk of the Reebok at full-time as his all-round energetic midfield master class was the catalyst for the three points.

From the first whistle it was evident that an exciting match would ensue. Within a couple of minutes it was David Bentley who first tested out Jaaskelainen with a shot from 25 yards that took a deceptive bounce before reaching the target. As always, the long-serving keeper was alert from the off and he made a confident parry before gaining full control of the ball at the second attempt.

It was only five minutes later that Wanderers launched their primary assault on Tottenham's goal, typically through an excellent pre-planned set piece. When Matthew Taylor was bundled off the ball 30 yards from goal, it was the number seven who picked himself up to whip across one of his trademark in-swinging deliveries. Kevin Davies outmuscled Woodgate and was unlucky to see his header sail over the bar from six yards out.

Again the new-appointed skipper was causing all sorts of problems for the defensive duo of Woodgate and Dawson, none more so than on 15 minutes when his knock down created an opening for Ariza Makukula. The Portuguese striker opted to shoot first time from the edge of the box, but his shot spurned wide and never tested Cudicini.

One man who was enjoying the occasion was new-boy Mark Davies, who after a steady start began to have an influence on play from midfield. He almost celebrated his home debut with a headed goal halfway through the first period after playing a neat one-two with Steinsson. The 20-year-old's original pass to find the full-back was the touch of a confident young player, and after making a darting run into the area, he couldn't quite direct his header on target.

The visitors' response to Bolton's ten-minute period of dominance was to carve out an opportunity of their own as Bentley worked Jaaskelainen with a first-time left-footed volley from just inside the box.

But it was the only real chance that Harry Redknapp's team could conjure up before Wanderers took the lead on 32 minutes.

Sebastien Puygrenier notched his first goal for the club with a powerful close-range header after he was excellently picked out by Mark Davies' pinpoint free-kick from the left. It could have been anyone of three players who leapt to plant the ball past the ball past Cudicini, but it was the Frenchman who was in the right place to give his new team the advantage in only his second start since moving from Zenit St Petersburg.

With a 1-0 lead under their belts, Bolton continued to dominate proceedings up until the break with Tottenham offering very little aside from their two wide players Bentley and Lennon.

Indeed, with Spurs coming second best in the first 45 minutes, it was no surprise to see Harry Redknapp shaking things up at the break as the ineffective Modric and Zokora were replaced by Jenas and Bent.

Muamba weakly shot at Cudicini, Makukula blazed over after a neat turn inside the penalty box and Pavlyuchenko tested Jaaskelainen with a first time volley in a fairly lively opening 15 minutes to the second half.

Makukula, who had again worked hard, was replaced on the hour mark as Ebi Smolarek was given 30 minutes to show what he could do.

But it wasn't the Pole who netted Wanderers' second goal of the game, instead it was his strike partner Kevin Davies who pounced with 65 minutes of the game gone. Jlloyd Samuel floated in a deep free-kick, Gary Cahill won the initial flick-on and it was the talismanic forward who lashed the ball into the roof of the net from a tight angle to claim his seventh goal of the season.

The two-goal lead only lasted seven minutes as substitute Darren Bent got Tottenham back into the game with a predatory close-range finish. Aaron Lennon linked up well with Chimbonda, and when the full-back slid an inviting pass across the six-yard box from the right byline, Bent converted first-time.

Three minutes later and it was Bent again who reacted the quickest to draw the two teams level. When Gary Cahill headed clear to the edge of the box, it was Wilson Palacios who drilled in a fizzing shot that Jaaskelainen could only palm away. The ball landed at the feet of Bent and he didn't miss, slotting through Jaaskelainen's legs to send the travelling fans wild.

It looked like Spurs had salvaged a point, but it was Kevin Davies' day as again he showed why Gary Megson viewed him as the ideal candidate to take over Kevin Nolan's mantle with what proved to be the match winning goal on 87 minutes.

Again it stemmed from another set-piece which Spurs failed to cope with as Davies stooped to nod past Cudicini and claim his second goal of the game. Taylor was the provider with a measured in-swinging corner and despite the best efforts of David Bentley on the post, the ball squirmed between the two and rippled in the back of the net.

Tottenham threw everything at Bolton in a frantic final few minutes, but the having re-established the lead in epic circumstances, Gary Megson's men weren't going to let this victory wriggle from their grasp.
