What an amazing two years it has been for Gary Cahill, who has enhanced his reputation as one of the finest young talents in the country with some consistent performances at the heart of the Wanderers defence.

The former Aston Villa man, who was purchased for a fee of £5m in January 2008, missed only six games last season and was one of the first names on the team sheet when fit and available, partnering either Andy O'Brien, Danny Shittu or Sebastien Puygrenier in the heart of Wanderers' rearguard.

Aside from duties in defence, Cahill also scored three goals - all instinctive finishes against West Ham United, Sunderland and Middlesbrough.

Cahill's outstanding performances were also noted by England coach Fabio Capello and he was selected in the England squad for the international fixtures against Kazakhstan and Andorra. Unfortunately he failed to make the final matchday squads on both occasions, but a first cap can't be too far away for the tall, elegant centre-half.

Cahill has continued to go from strength to strength in his second full season with the club, chipping in with some vital goals.
