Newcastle Reserves 3 Bolton Reserves 0
A youthful Wanderers second string started 2009 with a 3-0 defeat at Whitley Park.
First half goals from Nile Ranger and Frank Wiafe Danquah were added to shortly after half-time by Jonny Godsmark as the reserves slipped to their first loss in four outings in the Barclays Premier Reserve League.
Ranger put the Magpies ahead with a neat first-time finish from 12 yards after winger Godsmark had created the opportunity by dribbling past two defenders on the right flank.
Despite going a goal behind, Bolton heads didn't drop as twice the Trotters came close to equalising. Sam Sheridan struck the post and Javlon Campbell made goalkeeper Fraser Forster work with a shot from distance.
But the hosts doubled their lead five minutes before the interval when forward Frank Wiafe Danquah netted Newcastle's second. Again Godsmark was the creator as his cross was turned past Robert Lainton by the young Dutchman.
The game was effectively sealed by the Magpies when Godsmark managed to get on the scoresheet just 15 seconds into the second half. The provider of the first two goals latched onto Ranger's tidy pass before firing low past Lainton from halfway inside the penalty area.
Wanderers tried to get themselves back into the contest in the remainder of the match, but Newcastle's defence held firm to keep a clean sheet.
