ISRAELI international Tamir Cohen was sent off as Bolton crashed to their heaviest defeat since the opening day of the season to title hopefuls Manchester City at Leyland.

Cohen was sent off after collecting two yellow cards in the space of five minutes late in the second half, although the dismissal will not mean a ban at first-team level for the midfielder.

The scoreline was harsh on Alan Cork's side but Bolton paid the price for missing a number of chances and were ruthlessly exposed at the other end as City clinically took their opportunities.

"I said to the young lads that it's a lesson for them," said Cork. "They have got to learn about the game and you've got to make mistakes to learn.

"We got done by five but I think they had four shots in the second half and scored four goals.

"I thought in parts we played well and I was pleased. We were just a bit unlucky with some of the chances we had."

Bulgarian international Valeri Bojinov, continuing his return to full fitness, was among the City scorers as the visitors pressed home their advantage after taking just 17 seconds to score the opening goal.

Bolton were caught cold as Karl Moore crossed for David Ball to steer a low shot past Adam Bogdan and it took a smart save by Bogdan to stop Bojinov doubling the lead.

To their credit Bolton hit back strongly and Danny Ward shot just wide before he should have headed in a Cohen cross and the home side also started the second half strongly with Cohen, Michael O'Halloran and Temitope Obadeyi all getting sights of goal.

But City showed them how to finish with an hour gone when James Poole lashed a low shot past Bogdan and Bolton knew it would not be their night when Rob Sissons had a header controversially ruled out for off-side and O'Halloran rounded keeper Gunnar Nielsen but could not squeeze his shot past the covering defenders.

Bojinov got himself on the scoresheet when he swept in a cross from Adam Clayton to make it 3-0 after 75 minutes and moments later Rhys Bennett tripped substitute Ian Daly who converted from the spot to add to City's lead.

Cohen then saw red and even though Sissons gained a measure of consolation with the goal of the night, cracked in from 25 yards, City had the final word when Daly followed up a Bogdan save to roll in the fifth in the last minute.
