ROB LAINTON was the penalty shootout hero as he saved Kieran Trippier's penalty to ensure Wanderers defeated Manchester City in the Senior Cup.

Aaron Mooy, Adam Blakeman, Ricardo Vaz Te, Zolton Harsanyi and Rhys Bennett all converted their spot-kicks at Sport City, before Lainton dived to his right to prevent Trippier from netting.

Sam Sheridan put the visitors in front after 13 minutes when he gained control of Ben Mee's clearance. The ball broke to Vaz Te, who knocked it back towards the midfielder before continuing his run into the area and striking home.

Vaz Te forced a good save from Tobias Johansen with a towering header. But Ctity found themselves on terms shortly into the second-hald when Mooy upended Robbie Mak inside the penalty area. Andrew Tutte took advantage of the spot-kick and fired past Lainton.

Hotshot Harsanyi spurned a glorious chance to win it for Wanderers in normal time when Vaz Te picked him out, but the striker shot tamely at Johansen.
