Reserves Profiles 2011/12

The staff in-charge of the Wanderers second string include:

Below are a number of profiles on players who often feature for the Bolton Wanderers reserve team.


Goalkeepers

Rob Lainton

Name:
Rob Lainton
DOB: 12/10/1989

Rob Lainton joined Bolton Wanderers' academy at the under-15 level and has since progressed through to the first-team level, via the under-18s and reserve sides.

Born in Hyde, Lainton was considered as the third choice goalkeeper for the 2010/11 season behind Jussi Jaaskelainen and Adam Bogdan.

The young stopper got his first taste of action in a Bolton Wanderers matchday squad in the Barclays Premier League in the away fixture at Arsenal, acting as substitute goalkeeper with Jaaskelainen suspended.

Lainton is expected to be at Bolton Wanderers for the forseeable future having signed a new two-year contract in March 2011, keeping him at the Reebok until the summer of 2013 and made his full first team debut against Hereford in a pre-season friendly in August 2011.


Jay Lynch

Name: Jay Lynch
DOB: 30/3/1993

Lynch is a young and agile stopper who originally joined the club from Manchester United.

The Salford-born goalkeeper lists Pepe Reina as his role model and featured regularly for John Henry's reserve side during their recent pre-season campaign, pulling off a number of eye-catching saves.

Defenders

Joe Riley

Name: Joe Riley
DOB: 13/10/1991

A graduate from the Bolton Wanderers academy, Riley predominately plays on the right side of defence.

During the earlier years of his career, the 20-year-old had the opportunity to play at Anfield in the FA Youth Cup.

Riley lists Danny Welbeck and Federico Macheda as the toughest opponents that he has played against so far in his career and made his first team debut against Macclesfield in the Carling Cup in August 2011.
Rhys Bennett

Name: Rhys Bennett
DOB: 01/09/1991

The athletic defender started his career at Radcliffe Borough originally as a centre-forward. However at the age of 14 he was converted into a centre-back.

Prior to suffering an injury at the end of 2010, Bennett was a regular in John Henry's reserve side playing alongside the likes of Mark Connolly and Tom Eckersley in the heart of defence.

Whilst being on Wanderers books, the youngster has also spent time progressing his academic skills by studying for his A-Level qualifications.

Was loaned out to Scottish First Division club Falkirk at the start of the 2011/12 campaign.

Tom Eckersley

Name: Tom Eckersley
DOB: 06/12/1991

A former England youth international, Eckersley is another player to have made the grade at reserve team level having progressed through the Bolton Wanderers academy.

The aspiring central defender lists Roy Keane and John Terry as his role models, whilst also revealing that the strongest opponent that he has played against was the former Manchester City and Wigan Athletic midfielder Antoine Sibierski.

Mark Connolly

Mark Connolly
DOB: 16/12/1991

The Republic of Ireland defender was recruited from Wolverhampton Wanderers on transfer deadline day in 2009.

He spent the second-half of the 2009/10 season on loan at St Johnstone, making his debut against Hamilton Academicals.

Connolly made his Republic of Ireland Under-21 debut against Cyprus in February 2011 and now is a shoe-in for the second string, usually wearing the captain's armband.

Nathan Battersby

Name: Nathan Battersby
DOB: 13/11/1992

And up and down right-back, Leigh-born Battersby saw his most recent season somewhat hampered by injury but has bounced back to become a regular for the second string.

Alex McQuade

Name: Alex McQuade
DOB: 7/11/1992

A solid defender, McQuade has impressed when called upon by John Henry and his staff.

Strong in the tackle and capable of clever distribution to the midfield areas, McQuade is capable of playing at either left-back or in a more central role.

Andy Kellett

Name: Andy Kellett
DOB: 10/11/1993

Kellett's progress for the under-18 side was been so significant that he has now established himself as the first choice left-back for the reserve side.

A diminutive figure, Kellett excels when in possession of the ball and is more than capable of skipping around tackles in tight areas of the pitch.

Held in high regard by the Wanderers coaching staff, the youngster is certainly one to watch for the future.


Midfielders

Adam Blakeman

Name: Adam Blakeman
DOB: 3/12/1991

A versatile player with an eye for goal, Blakeman often occupies the left-back role for the reserve side but is equally adept playing in the centre or on the left side of midfield.

Regularly on the scoresheet for John Henry's side, Blakeman is often charged with duties from set-pieces and penalties and occupies a sweet left foot.

Tope Obadeyi

Name: Tope Obadeyi
DOB: 29/10/1989

Birmingham-born Obadeyi joined Wanderers in 2006 following a successful youth career with Coventry City and has progressed enough to earn loan spells at Football League outfits Swindon Town, Rochdale and most recently Shrewsbury Town.

Capped at numerous youth levels for England, Obadeyi has regularly featured on either flank for John Henry's side due to his swift turn of pace and ability to carry the ball into dangerous areas of the opponents' half and has also featured for the first team including a notable appearance at the Emirates against Arsenal.

Recently joined Chesterfield on loan until Boxing Day.

Josh Vela

Name: Josh Vela
DOB: 14/12/1993

Vela has emerged as a promising prospect at Wanderers, so much so that he signed professional terms with the club in March 2011.

Although regularly associated as a centre-midfielder, he can also play on either flank or just behind the strikers.

Vela lists one of his long-term ambitions as progressing through to the Bolton Wanderers first-team, and he already has experience of playing on the Reebok Stadium in the FA Youth Cup third round clash against Crewe Alexandra in November 2010.

Vela travelled with the Bolton Wanderers first-team squad for the friendly against Cliftonville in Belfast in late November, and the youngster made a late substitute appearance replacing Rodrigo with 15 minutes remaining.

At the start of the 2011/12 season Vela was an unused substitute for the first team game against Chelsea.

MacGregor

Name:
Graeme MacGregor
DOB: 14/6/1993

Former Falkirk midfielder MacGregor joined the club in 2008 and has since progressed through the ranks to feature for the second string.

A cultured midfielder, MacGregor is neat and tidy on the ball and a consistent performer.

Liam Irwin

Name: Liam Irwin
DOB: 25/12/1992

Liam is the son of former Manchester United defender Denis Irwin and has already represented his nation at under-19 level.

Calm and composed in possession, Irwin is a natural central midfielder whilst also harbouring the ability to play in behind the strikers.

Liam joined the club after an initial trial period with Manchester United.
Strikers

Michael O'Halloran

Name: Michael O'Halloran
DOB: 06/01/1991

An agile frontman, O'Halloran signed for Wanderers from Celtic as a youngster and scored plenty of goals for the Under-18 side.

The Scotsman continued this goalscoring form with John Henry's reserve side during the 2010/11 season, so much so that he progressed to earn a place on the bench for the first team in their FA Cup third round tie against York City.

He made his first team debut in the Carling Cup tie against Macclesfield in August 2011 and was an unused substitute for the Premier League game against Everton in November.

Tom Eaves

Name: Tom Eaves
DOB: 14/01/1992

Signed for the club in the summer of 2010 having impressed in a pre-season friendly playing for Oldham Athletic where he came off the bench in the first-half to net a hat-trick against Wanderers.

A strong and powerful centre-forward, Eaves has rapidly adjusted to life at his new club finding the net on countless occasions throughout the duration of the 2010/11 season for the reserves, including two goals against his former club Oldham.

Sampson_academy

Name: Jack Sampson
DOB: 14/4/1993

A powerful target man, Sampson is strong in the air whilst equally adept with the ball at his feet.

Capped by the England Under-19 side, Sampson previously played for Wigan prior to signing for Wanderers.

Odelusi_academy

Name: Oluwasanmi Odelusi
DOB: 11/6/1993

Londoner Odelusi operates upfront and during his early years in the under-18 side was able to boast a prolific record.

Since progressing into the reserve side Odelusi has developed his game and is now capable of playing on either wing and up top in a front two.
