NOWADAYS THE media plays an extremely important role in the news. Without the means of media including radio, TV and written press we wouldn't get to hear about important issues. The press also assist in the current updates within the sport industry and especially in football.

Football is becoming the most popular sport of all time, and it is with the help of the communications industry that this has happened.

The FA Premiership has various deals with TV channels to promote Premiership football. Each Premiership club receives a basic payout of approximately £6.3million per season, plus an additional amount which is reflected on the amount of appearances the club has on Sky,  BBC and Sport on Five.

One of the benefits of the TV pay-out is the prospect of greater entertainment and the fact of team strengthening, for example the signing of Youri Djorkaeff, Ivan Campo and Jay Jay Okocha in recent campaigns. This eventually has the prospect of higher future league positions and even a much-coveted access to Europe!

In June 2000 the Premier League announced a TV deal which is fairly complex and involves a range of media rights and companies:

For 66 live games over 2001 - 2004, to be shown on Sky's subscription services - BSKYB will pay £1.11 billion, plus £22.5 million for interactive services. Match highlights screened on ITV, which outbid the BBC, will net another £183 million.

Sky's Premiership Plus provides even more live matches from the Barclaycard Premiership with an extra 40 games shown live on the digital platform.

The Premiership Plus channel was born from the FA's decision to make an additional set of matches available each year on a pay-per-view basis.

In February 2001 the Premier League announced approval for a record overseas TV deal. This included the sale of rights to a group made up of various international channels such as Octagon CSI, Sport + and TWI for a total of £178million up to 2004.

Richard Scudamore, the Premier League Chief Executive stated:

"We have concluded a deal that recognises the enormous global strength of the FA Premier League. The exposure this gives us will enhance the reputation of the League an its member Clubs throughout the world."

He went on to add:

"This is an exceptionally good deal for both parties, a great opportunity for both the FA Premier League and our sponsors Barclaycard to build on each other's strength and growing reputation throughout the world."
