Marcos Alonso joined Bolton Wanderers from Real Madrid in the summer of 2010.

Born in Madrid, Alonso hails from a rich footballing background with his grandfather representing Real Madrid in the late 1950s and early 1960s, while his father enjoyed a five-year spell with Los Blancos’ fierce rivals Barcelona in the mid 1980s.

The highly-rated 21-year-old progressed through the ranks at Santiago Bernabeu and made his first-team debut in a 2-0 win over Racing Santander in April 2010.

Alonso, who is a natural left-sided defender, made his debut for Wanderers in the pre-season victory against St Johnstone at McDiarmid Park and later went on to make nine competitive appearances throughout his first season at the Reebok.

In 2011/12 he endured an injury plagued season which hampered his progress, but still made six Premier League appearances and scored his first goal for the club in the 3-2 win over Wolves at Molineux.
