PREVIEW: Wanderers v Ipswich Town

Match info as Whites prepare to take on Ipswich at the University of Bolton Stadium

14 January 2022

Wanderers make a rapid return to the University of Bolton Stadium when they face Ipswich Town in a second home game in five days.

The 18th-placed Whites were beaten 2-0 by Wycombe on Tuesday night as their six-game unbeaten home run came to an end.

But Ian Evatt’s men have a chance to regain some momentum as they to look to repeat their victory over Ipswich in September with four of their next six games on home turf.

Town are unbeaten in three games under recently appointed manager Kieran McKenna to sit 10th in the table following a 4-0 win at Gillingham last time out.

Pre-match quotes

Ian Evatt: “We know it’s a difficult period and we know we’ve got work to do. It doesn’t get any easier with two of the next three games Ipswich and Sunderland.

“It’s going to be tough and challenging, with Shrewsbury in between, so it doesn’t get any easier.

“But things are getting better for us. The new players are settling in really well and making a difference, returning players are making a difference and we just need to break this cycle of defeats and get some confidence back and hopefully that will happen on Saturday.

“Ipswich have had some very good results. Kieran (McKenna) is a very experienced coach and has worked at the highest level. It’s down to him to get the best of his players at Ipswich and it’ll be a difficult game but one that we’re looking forward to."

Kieran McKenna: “We have had a really good training week and the players have worked hard.

“There has been a focus on things both individually and tactically as a team, and things have gone well.

“It's good because we have a long journey ahead and a battle against Bolton ahead. We want to put the things we've been working on into practice on the pitch, like we did at Gillingham.

“The players are confident and looking forward to the game, and we have to make sure we use that energy in a positive way. We want personality on the ball and plenty of hunger and aggression off the ball.”

Team news

Wanderers’ new midfield signing Aaron Morley is set to be involved for the first time and on-loan goalkeeper James Trafford is also challenging for a potential debut.

The Whites will be without forwards Elias Kachunga, who is facing a couple of months out with a thigh injury, and Xav Amaechi who is a shorter term absentee with a hamstring strain.

On-loan Kosovo winger Bersant Celina could return to the Ipswich squad after being out of action since the start of December.
