A first-half header from Lee Gregory decides Wednesday's friendly at the Shay

One goal decided Wednesday’s friendly between FC Halifax Town and Bolton Wanderers, with Lee Gregory’s first-half strike earning the Yorkshire club victory by the slenderest of margins at the Shay.

After seeing an early shot dragged wide, the Halifax striker made no mistake on 35 minutes, heading in Ryan Toulson’s cross.

Before the deadlock had been broken, Bolton could have taken the lead. Full-back Andy Kellett blazed over when bearing down on Matt Glennon, while the former Wanderers goalkeeper turned a Tom Eaves effort behind for a corner.

After the break, the Shaymen came close to doubling their advantage when Gareth Seddon headed over from an unmarked position.

Equally, Wanderers also had a couple of opportunities to get back level pegging.

Michael O’Halloran’s low shot was saved well by Glennon, while Adam Blakeman missed the target having broken the offside trap after John Henry had earlier shaken things up by making five changes with just under 20 minutes left.

Seddon again could have scored in the dying stages only to scuff his finish, but the hosts held on to claim the 1-0 win.

Wanderers: Lynch, Battersby, Kellett, McQuade (Dennis 72), Hampson, Threlkeld, McKee (Sampson 72), Roberts (Odelusi 72), Eaves (Woodland 72), O’Halloran (Iliev 72), Blakeman.
