Spearing: Bounce Back Against Birmingham

On-loan midfielder speaks after the recent defeat against Sheffield Wednesday

Wanderers midfielder Jay Spearing admitted the team were left frustrated at not being able to break down a stubborn Sheffield Wednesday side on Boxing Day.

The Liverpool loanee turned in an industrious performance in the middle of the park, but was disappointed that, despite controlling large periods of the game, the team couldn’t find a way through.

A first-half header from Owls frontman Mamady Sidibe ensured Wednesday returned to Yorkshire with the points, but, aside from that effort, the visitors had very few clear-cut chances.

Speaking after the match, Spearing said: “In the first half I thought we were on top but they hit us on the break and that was enough for them to win the game. In the second half we gave it a right good go but couldn’t get the goal.

“I didn’t feel that they caused us massive problems and I think we moved the ball about quite well at times. We should have come out of the game with more than we did; we had our chances.

“There’s just been a few little things that haven’t gone our way recently. But the team is trying hard in training and we’re learning lots of new things from the manager and the way he wants us to play.”

The festive period is a notoriously busy time on the footballing calendar, but Spearing is pleased that the games are coming thick and fast. He added: “We’re all extremely disappointed in the dressing room, but fortunately we’ve got a game against Birmingham on Saturday where we can put things right.

“We’ve got a lot of games over this Christmas period and we realise that we need to bounce back quickly, get a win under our belts and pick up some points over the next few games.”
