Duo Try Their Hand At New Sport

Joe Riley and Michael O'Halloran visit St Catherine's Academy in latest community visit

Wanderers academy graduates Joe Riley and Michael O’Halloran found out more about the sport of handball last week when they visited St Catherine’s Academy for the launch of the introduction of the game to the Club’s Premier League 4 Sport programme delivered by Bolton Wanderers Community Trust.

Launched in 2009, PL4S is a Premier League initiative that offers young people the chance to get involved in Olympic sports and also helps the government’s ambitions to raise participation rates amongst young people as part of its Olympic 2012 legacy plans.

The four sports originally involved in the initiative were judo, table tennis, badminton and hockey. Following the success of handball during London 2012, the sport was added to the programme for young people across Bolton and looks to address the drop-off in sport participation when students leave secondary school.

Joe and Michael were talked through the basics the sport by a member of England Handball before practising their skills at a small sided game before taking a break to sign some autographs and pose for photographs. The duo ended their time at St Catherine’s Academy with one final game where both players even scored a goal for their teams.
