Striker speaks after scoring his first goal for the club
Jermaine Beckford admits he would happily trade his first Bolton goal for a win following Tuesday night’s Capital One Cup defeat at Tranmere Rovers.
The Whites were beaten 4-2 on penalties at Prenton Park after the game finished 1-1 after extra time.
However, one positive for manager Dougie Freedman was seeing striker Beckford open his account for the club, as he expertly finished from close range past Owain Fon Williams midway through the second half.
Reflecting back on the match, Beckford praised the younger members of the Bolton squad for their performances, with the likes of Tom Eaves, Samni Odelusi and Tom Youngs all featuring throughout the evening.
“When a game goes to penalties it is one of those things that could go either way,” said the former Everton and Leeds marksman.
“Unfortunately for us their goalkeeper saved a couple and the luck was with Tranmere.
“For the neutral fan, they always want to see the tie go to penalties and we were unfortunate to lose on the night.
“Our fans were great right the way throughout the game and I would like to thank them personally for that.
“We need our fans when we are playing away from home and we have got the majority of the crowd against us, they are our 12th man and they helped on Tuesday night.
“It is always good to score the first goal and I am happy but on the flip side I would trade in that goal for a win.
“To be fair to Tranmere, they put themselves about and played well. In the second half we put them under a bit more pressure and we were unfortunate not to see one of Tom Eaves’ goals count.
“On the positive side, the youngsters did well, they worked hard and we have good prospects for the future, so for them to get first team experience is taking a positive from a negative result.”
