Sparky - Side over self

Points the priority for goal-scoring midfielder

Mark Davies was delighted to get himself on the scoresheet in the 4-1 victory over Hull City, but admitted that his main priority remains helping the Whites finish the season as strongly as possible.

After being sidelined since early December with a shoulder injury, the midfielder marked his first home start in almost three months with a goal inside five minutes after Darren Pratley had given the Whites an early lead.

Despite his own personal achievement however, Davies confessed that picking up three valuable points is the most important thing to him.

“It’s great to be back in the side, but it’s not about me – we’ve got to pick up wins and this was a massive victory for us,” he said.

“Even in the past couple of months when I’ve been injured, I’ve been coming to the games and I thought we were due a really good win as we’ve been playing some great football.

“Hopefully now we’ve got a result like this behind us we can kick on and end the season on a high.”

Having raced into a 3-0 lead inside eight minutes the result was never really in doubt as Wanderers restricted the visitors to a few half chances throughout the game, but Davies revealed that the team were confident prior to kick off that they could shock the promotion-chasing Tigers.

“We knew we had to start early and just press them for the first fifteen minutes or so and not let them have the ball, but to start like we did was an absolute dream - I thought when we got the second goal that it could’ve been five or six easily.”

Davies was also quick to praise the Reebok faithful who were in fine voice throughout the afternoon – a factor which he believes played a vital part in the helping the Whites secure the win.

“I thought the fans were excellent today – they got behind the players from the start which helped a lot.

“It’s always great to get a win like that, but we can’t afford to slip up - Peterborough on Tuesday is a massive game and if we manage to get three points, we’ll be pushing up into the top half of the table.”
